Technology & Combat Characteristics

The RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type is a less expensive variant of the original RX-77-2 Guncannon produced from the Earth Federation's "Project V." The Mass Produced Guncannon doesn't have a Core Block System and similar to the RGM-79 GM, its armor consists of Titanium Alloy/Ceramic Composite instead of the stronger and and much more expensive Luna Titanium Alloy. This makes the Mass Production Guncannon lighter, thus increasing its performance in acceleration and fuel consumption. As opposed to the Guncannon, the Mass Production Type did not utilize a powerful beam rifle. Instead, it used either the typical GM's 100mm or 90mm machine gun, the latter having less ammo capacity, but having better armor penetration ability. The Mass Production Guncannon has been said to utilize the RGM-79C GM Type C Beam Gun, the upgrade to the GM's Beam Spray Gun, but the GM Kai is not known to use a Beam Rifle.

1/144 HGUC RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type Scale Model Kit Review

The Mass Production Gun Cannon from Gundam 0080 has been a fan favorite for years with its awesome looking shoulder mounted cannons that can fold forwards and backwards.

This rendition of the Guncannon is the cooler of the two. Doing away with the round casting of the original, the mass-produced version has a lot more potential for extra detailing. It comes with a 90mm machinegun rather than beam rifle, and of course features both shoulder-mounted cannons after which it’s named. The kit is cast in full color and is snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to complete it. You may want to give it those extra details with a Gundam marker though.

Review by Tetsujin

I’ve been working on an Armored Core project lately – unfortunately I’ve been unable to get anywhere with it lately because I’ve run out of Mr. Color black paint… So while I wait for my paint to arrive in the mail, I’m working on some other things. For the last couple days I’ve been working on the HGUC RX-77D Guncannon Mass-Production type. This is the version of the Guncannon which appeared in Gundam 0080. The HGUC kit is pretty good overall but as with most of the Gundam 0080 HGUC kits its representation of the original design is a bit distorted… Since getting the kit I’ve been a bit unsure about how to go about correcting the issues with the kit.

Inspired by Hobby Japan’s recent re-release of their “How to Build Gundam” books, I decided to finally take on the challenge of building the kit, and trying to correct its deficiencies.

To me one of the biggest problems with this kit is the lower legs. It’s a little hard sometimes to identify exactly what’s wrong with them – they tend to look rather klunky. Sometimes they strike me as being too long, too wide, too narrow – just something looks off. I think the basic problem is that the kit feet are too small: the original design had fairly massive feet, and these helped to balance out the look of the lower leg. The model kit has more moderately-sized feet – and to prevent these from looking completely out of place, the end of the lower leg near the ankle is narrower than it would otherwise be – and the length of the lower leg was (I believe) made too long in order to make up for the lost height from shrinking the feet.

When I’m trying to figure out where a model design went wrong I usually go straight back to the original source design. From measurements taken from that lineart I figure the Guncannon’s feet should be nearly 3cm wide – roughly 50% wider than the ones supplied on the kit. Under the circumstances I’m not sure altering the kit part is really a viable option, but I may attempt it rather than going for a full scratch build… But that’s a lot of width, height, and depth to add to an existing part… I may have to experiment a bit.

My plan is to scratch-build new feet. I will also be modifying the lower legs in various ways to try to improve the look. So far I’ve cut a wedge-shaped chunk out of the leg to give it more of a taper toward the top. (I cut away roughly 2mm of front-to-back depth from the top of the lower leg, and a relatively small amount from the bottom of the leg. The change in the leg’s taper is subtle but I think it’s a big improvement.

HGUC RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type Scale Model Kit Review 1The next thing I changed was the chest: in the original lineart (and even in Katoki’s lineart for the HGUC kit) there’s fairly little bulk to the chest block beneath the chest vents. The kit has a taller chest block, with a longer slope to the armor under the vents. I cut away 2mm of height from the chest block.

HGUC RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Type Scale Model Kit Review 2This is the current state of the model. You can see the alterations to the chest block and to the left leg. You may also notice that I’ve used aftermarket hands: these are the Kotobukiya 1:144 “Normal Hand” parts. I think these look quite nice – and unlike the 1/100 versions they don’t seem oversized at all…

One other issue I haven’t addressed yet is the cannons. The cannons on the MP Guncannon have extending barrels – on the kit, the inner section of the extending segment of the cannon barrel is too thin, and the wall of the outer section is too thick. This may be a consequence of how the parts were molded or something – I don’t really know. But it pisses me off. I think the stock kit guns look terrible in extended position. I haven’t worked out exactly what I’m going to do about them yet.

For this kit, i wanted to stay away from the traditional all red body and white head color scheme. I always thought it looked a bit wierd with a solid color for the entire body (whether red, blue, green, etc) with a white head. In my ideal UC universe, the federation would have standard colors much like any military with their standard colors. So I decided that for my collection, I should use a variation of the standard color for the GM as the standard scheme for all my "grunt" EFSF Mobile SUITs. I think if the UC universe was real, like any military, colors would be conforming (with the exception of special forces or ace pilots). So I chose light grey and primary red for my standard Feddie colors. With a GM 79 and a GM command to match in color and markings, I think it will be a nice addition to my HGUC collection. The seams where a real pain in the A for this kit, not paint friendly engineering at all. Anyways, as usual mistakes here and there but im glad i finally got to finish.

The HGUC Guncannon MPT is yet another part of Bandai's 0080 HGUC releases, and was quite the surprise to HGUC Fans. This MS had very little exposure in the series it was shown in (0080 War in the Pocket) but has made it to the HGUC line somehow. The MS itself is actually better than the original Guncannon as far as statistical data goes which is surprising since most Mass Production Types are weaker than the prototypes. Anyways, the kit iself is great! Onto its Review!

The kit iself is molded in the correct colors which is a nice feature if you're not into painting all those details left out. Its construction is bulky yet sturdy. The kits articulation is especially unique at the knees, where the joint can not only bend like a knee, but can also pivot at the knee joint. In additoin, the ankle articulation may not be double jointed, but it has a great range of motion. This allows the kit to be very poseable, which is a big plus. The only downfall of the pivoting kneecap is that they aren't as tight as I would like. I almost lost the lower leg because it came off at the joint and I didn't even notice while transporting it to the basement for further work. Aside from that, it comes with the same machine gun as the GM Command HGUC kit and has a trigger hand and a fist hand for the right arm. The other hand is just a fist. The cannons themselves on the back are very cool and telescope out once they are over the shoulder. This extention allows for a range of poses with the cannons.

Above all, this kit is one of my favorites in my collection. Its tight construction and practical gimmicks make it a HGUC kit worth your dollar.

Introduction

I've never really liked the Guncannon - the bulky, roundish kiddie design just gives it away. However when the 0080 OVA was shown I saw its supposedly mass-produced version - the RX-77D. It was just pitiful Bandai never thought of putting it into any kit form except for the expensive "integral" resin. I snagged this baby once it was available at a local shop and constructed it at home immediately, much to my heart's content. I would admit though, when I was constructing this kit, it strangely felt like a Macross Destroid... (a Kawamori effect?!)

After the success of its mass produced "GM" the Earth Federation proceeded to mass-produce one of its prototype mobile suits: the mid-range fire support RX-77 Guncannon. The RX-77D's design however has been modified to ease production costs: titanium ceramic composite armor was used instead of luna titanium and the core block system design was scrapped. To compensate for the revisions incurred, additional verniers were added to increase mobility and performance. Aside from its 230mm cannons, the MP Guncannon comes equipped with vulcan guns and a 90mm machine gun (instead of the prototype version's beam rifle). Only a few units were produced in the last few weeks of the One-Year War: two were assigned to the Pegasus class Gray Phantom's Scarlet Team while one unit was assigned to the White Dingo Team in Australia.

Box art- The box format is uses the same format for HGUC kits, with a CG art of the kit mixed with the actual illustration of the kit - the MP Guncannon shooting with one of its cannons still retracted.

Package- 3 runners in all for a bulky MS?! All molded according to each part's color.

Head

The head is composed of 5 parts, with each colored component a separate piece. There's no clear visor so you get a metallic green sticker instead. Details (EFSF crest, communications antenna, "helmet bar", 30mm vulcan guns) are well defined and articulation is quite fair.

Torso

Composed of predefined color parts while the crotch area's front skirt armor is articulated (for unrestricted sitting/kneeling poses). I just love the blockish design - makes it look a lot more buff and refined while the details are excellent in all aspects.

The backpack is composed of pre-colored parts (except for the verniers, which are red,) and by design, looks really cool compared to the prototype's design. I would warn you however to take caution when constructing this area - I broke off a portion the backpacks' cannon cover locking shaft which connects to the backpack because it was simply too thin. Plus, construction is not defined clearly by the manual so please study it first. (I strongly suggest you drill holes on the covers cooling holes to make it look better.)

Arms

Simple construction. The shoulder armors are massive and looks great. The elbow joints are covered with an "armor cover" which I find quite aesthetic. The lower arms look great too, despite the almost visible seam lines. The hands come in two sets: 1 pair closed fists while a right hand for holding the 90mm machine gun.

Legs

The upper legs, thanks to the front skirt armor look great, while the lower knee joints (there are two points of leg articulation) are hidden by the "armor covers" which allows the legs to swivel sideward! The lower legs' design looks fair although being less blocky. Foot articulation however, is excellent thanks to the wide range of motion. I would have to say, this kit is quite well balanced!

Weapons and Accessories

30mm vulcan gun- Well detailed in the head. Cool.

90mm machine gun- The 0083-style machine gun. Fits well into the assigned right hand. Honestly, Bandai should've at least given this kit a special MP version of the prototype's beam rifle, because I find it ironic for a Guncannon (whether prototype or mass-produced!) to have such a peashooter!

240mm cannons- The construction the cannons were complex to me at first but after careful hand-eye coordination, I managed to finish it. The cannons can be moves to retracted and positioned upwards for non-use and be extended and positioned to any desirable degree for firing poses. Also, the cannons do not come in contact with the head. Details are excellent here except for a certain flaw: the base of the cannons (that connect to the backpack) tend to loosen after some time - I would suggest that you glue them in place.

Conclusion

For an HGUC kit released in 2004, Bandai sure is making lots of improvements. Being a poseable and well-defined kit, the MP Guncannon is one bulky yet buffed-up cannon fodder! Kawamori fans, this is simply a must buy!
