Technology & Combat Characteristics

The C-Type Zaku II had been heavily armored, which had made it heavy and difficult to maneuver. However, further research and development would lead to the creation of a lighter, improved model designated the F-Type Zaku II. The F-Type would quickly become the definitive version of the Zaku II, and all future variants would begin from the F-type as a baseline.

The Principality of Zeon saw great potential within the unit for having it perform in various mission roles. The Zeon Military forces produced successful designs, decent designs, and utter failures from the basic Zaku II design. Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi had his own custom Zaku II, which he took out into the Battle of Loum. His MS-06F Zaku II had ornate engravings and markings, double shoulder spiked armor, and lastly, a gigantic Heat Hawk. Even the youngest Zabi son, Garma Zabi had his own Zaku II, the MS-06FS Zaku II. This slight variation of the Zaku II designed featured twin 40 mm Vulcan guns. However, he is not known to have used it in battle.

Armaments

  • ZMP-50D 120mm Machine Gun - The 120mm machine gun is a standard weapon for Zaku type mobile suits. It is a shell firing gun that does not require energy to be used, however its effectiveness against heavy armor is very little. The ZMP-50D used a 100-round drum magazine.

  • 280MM Zaku Bazooka - The 280mm Zaku Bazooka was another standard weapon that could be equipped to a Zaku type mobile suit. The bazooka fired explosive rounds that were quite effective against the armor of Earth Federation battleships. However the bazooka could only be loaded with a single round at a time, thus it had to be used carefully. The bazooka was front loaded which is difficult to do while a mobile suit is changing vectors. The bazooka could be stored on the rear waist armor while spare ammunition could be stored on the side hip armor.

  • Heat hawk Type5 - An axe-shaped close combat weapon, it uses a super-heated blade to cut through the armor of enemy MS or vehicles. The thermal energy is generated by the power output of the Zaku II's thermonuclear reactor and relayed through the MS' hands.

  • MIP-B6 cracker grenade - Identical to those used by infantry, the cracker grenade is an explosive weapons designed to be thrown or launched by the MS and detonate after a set amount of time. The "cracker" breaks into several smaller munitions over a wide area.

  • 3-tube missile pod - Mounted on the legs are two 3-tube missile pods. These misiles are quite good weapon agianst armored enemies. However, they are also slow and therefore unsuitable for combat against nimble targets that can easily avoid them.

History

The Zaku II was eventually replaced by the MS-07B Gouf for ground combat. With the debut of the MS-09 Dom and the MS-09R Rick Dom, the Zaku II was largely regarded as obsolete and the MS-09 became the new frontline mobile suit. Lastly, the MS-14A Gelgoog had all but sealed the Zaku II's fate due its high-performance and ability to use beam weaponry. However, despite the fact that Zeon had developed more powerful mobile suits, they also produced several variations of the Zaku II as the war continued. This is sometimes justified by describing the Zaku as being easier to pilot than other, more powerful mobile suits.

1/144 HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Reviews

The Zaku II is one of the most popular and recognizable suits from the entire Gundam Franchise - which explains all of the different variants out there- and the HGUC Zaku II renders it in great detail. Not only does this 1/144 scale model have great poseability and cool gimicks, t also comes with the signature weaponry of the mobile suit including the Heat Hawk, Zaku Bazooka, and Zaku Machine Gun with detatchable ammo.

This is just the standard color, but it does come with some neat accessories aside from the usual ones. Included are the classic machine gun, bazooka and heat hawk, but added for this release are leg-mounted tri-missile pods.

Review by Siroh32

This is the 1/144-scaled MS-06F Zaku II model from the High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) lineup; 40th in line. Don't mind the model behind it; I'll give a review on it later. I just thought it'd spice things up a bit to have a bit more than an alternate pose for a second image of the Gunpla (plus my two cents that goes on and on and on).

Like the Zaku I, this model is pretty simple in detail. Given the MS designer is the iconic Kunio Okawara, and that it's debut was on Episode 1 of Mobile Suit Gundam, a 1979 anime trying to branch off from Super Robot anime/manga, it's pretty much a no-brainer... Well, if you don't pay mind to the Beecraft and other versions of the design (even some of Okawara's own in 08th MS Team or The Origin), of course. Although I never bothered, panel lines are relatively simple, even though I imagine panel-lining the power cables would be a bit tedious.

The articulation is standard; the arm bends at the standard 90° angle to allow basic articulation to function (whether it's a melee fight or Hollywood-esque ways of holding ranged weaponry), and so does the legs; making the design inferior to the newer Zaku I model and even the older Gundam Mk. II model. The mono-eye can be moved if you take apart the head to move the circular part around (which I did for this photo and then "resetted" it afterward), which is tedious. The Zaku I at least allows you to just remove the head and move a little tab, even though it doesn't move the mono-eye much for that model. Still, part of looking around is moving the head... The feet articulation allows stretching it out from the leg or bending it into in order to get more "stable" poses involving any stretching of the legs; barely allowing what can be barely called a kneeling pose. It's actually a good feature, which it got from Char's Zaku II (the Zaku I follows this).

Accessories are basic; I believe three hands altogether (one right hand with a trigger finger, two standard hands), each one consisting of two pieces. The weaponry is few, and all gray.

The iconic gun is basically this color in the lineart, however has a pinkish sensor akin to the mono-eye's color. There's no sticker for the sensor, so you may want to use a marker (a purple or blue one helps; I've seen blue markers automatically reflect to a pink color and purple to a lesser extent).

The standard bazooka is bigger than the Zaku I's, and more impressive. I believe also all gray, and may need a bit of a marker fixup for at least the barrel. You're going to have to take apart the hands and put the weapon handles in-between the hand pieces so the model can hold the weapons.

The heat hawk needs the most work; the default colors are purple and an orange blade (to show how hot the heat hawk is, I guess), but I prefer a more military-like green or Zaku-like green with a silver/metallic blade, however only did that for my Zaku I's heat hawk. The pro is that you can simply place this hawk into the hand, but the bad news is that it won't connect to the model and can fall off if you move it around or it's posed impossibly for the weapon to stay in the hand. They actually work better on the PC runner-type hands of older 1/144-scaled models.

Since the Zaku II is an earlier HGUC model based on the first and most well-known mass-produced mobile suit design, I tend to excuse it's shortcomings and might actually want to have it as a mass-produced unit in my collection (get a couple more), but more likely I may pick up variants like the HGUC Zaku II F2 (basically a Zaku II redesigned by Hajime Katoki, though it's an actual variant in Gundam 0083).

It's an intimidating design, which makes it more ironic that the approacing and kinda odd-looking FLAT mobile suit is going to slap the Zaku II (despite wanting truth in advertising for giving my two cents on the Gunpla itself, I might as well call it Borjarnon and switch titles with my other entry on the Zaku II as it kinda fits better here with the approaching FLAT) and vibrate it all to hell. Yeah, in the Turn A Gundam anime, the MS-06 Borjarnon (in Gavane Goonny's Suicide Squad) may have more luck as being the good guy mass-produced MS unit (one of two, anyway), but when it comes to the stranger and more advanced MSs out there, it doesn't seem to by even a hair. Even when up against FLATs that can vibrate away any of it's conventional attacks. But it still can put up a hell of a fight (as can the Kapool MSs), and had in other episodes of TAG.

Bottom line: I'd say get it if you like the Zaku designs in general, especially the classic design over any variant (be it Izubuchi's in 0080, or Katoki's in 0083). I personally prefer Katoki's newer one that came out after I got this model, but Okawara's design is still great.

Review and Building Process by Neal Izumi

The Zaku is the Principality of Zeon's standard mass production mobile suit from the first Gundam TV show. I developed an instant fondness for the gun fodder mech, even before I knew what the show was about. Bandai released their first 1/144 scale Zaku kit back in 1980, but this kit is from their newer High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) series, and is a far cry from the original. The concept of the HGUC series was to emphasize good proportions while keeping construction simple. Although some of the later kits have become quite involved, the Zaku perfectly illustrates Bandai's intent.

Head

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 1I wanted to eliminate the seams around the mono-eye slots, but that meant the head had to be assembled prior to painting. Therefore, the bottom of the head was carefully cut away to allow the mono-eye guard to be inserted after the filling and sanding process.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 2The mono-eye is represented as a sticker and looks very toy-like. I wanted to improve its appearance, so a hole was drilled into where the eye was to go, and a bit of clear sprue was CA glued in. A piece of aluminum foil placed over thinned Tamiya acrylic transparent red from the backside of the sprue gave the illusion of a lit pink monoeye. The outer surface of the mono-eye shield was sanded with 400 to 1500 grit wet-n-dry sandpaper, then polished with Tamiya coarse and fine polishing compounds applied with a damp Kleenex. The bare plastic of the mono-eye guard polished up really well, and looked like glass when done.

Body

The body components assembled well and required no modifications. The shoulder joints have a swing forward mechanism to allow the arms to move closer together, an important feature when toting a two-handed weapon.

My only addition was a pair of Wave brand aftermarket rocket engine nozzles to the blank back pack.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 3The most onerous part of constructing this kit was the cleaning up of the power conduits. I used thin strips of 400 and 600 grit sand paper to "floss" the recessed joints to eliminate the mold parting lines. This took several evenings. The body power conduits needed to be carefully bent to shape, but both of mine broke. Perhaps using a heat gun or soaking in hot water would have prevented this.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 4Remember to floss after every meal. Thin strips of 400 and 600 grit wetn- dry sandpaper were used to clean up the mold parting lines in the recesses of the power conduits. It was a pain in the aft thrusters, but the results improve the look of the model.

Arms

The lower arms did not fit perfectly and there were gaps between the parts. Removing the snap fit pins will improve the fit. I replaced the blocky hands with Bandai's own house brand aftermarket B-Club resin manipulators. They were fussy to clean up, but their fingers and joints were much better defined than the kit's. The resin hands had ball connectors molded on, but they fit loosely into the kit's poly capped wrist joints. I cut the ball joints off the kit's plastic hands and transplanted them to the resin replacements.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 5I removed the snap fit pins in the lower arm on this second kit, and the gaps disappeared when the parts were assembled.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 6Lookit the size of that whammer! The kit's plastic hands are oversized and have concessions in detail due to molding limitations. The resin hands have fine detail, but at a cost over twice the kit!

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 7Bandai's High Detail Manipulator resin replacement hands that are specifically for the Zaku.

Legs

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 8The upper and lower legs needed some filling to correct some mismatched joints. The feet go together without any problems though.

Weapons

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 9Cleaning up the mold parting lines of the weapons was really fun, kind of like pulling teeth. There were a lot of intricate areas which needed to be cleaned up. I added some Kotobukiya "minus molds" to fill in the depressions on the end of the stock assembly. I added a clear lens to the machine gun scope and treated it similarly to the mono-eye. The round ammunition magazine was hollow, so it was filled in with Mori-Mori polyester putty. The kit comes with a machine gun, bazooka, heat hawk (hatchet), and a pair of leg mounted rocket pods. I finished only the machine gun and rocket pods, saving the rest for another day.

Painting

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 10The parts were spray primed with Gunze Sangyo's Mr Surfacer 1200, checked for flaws, pre shaded with Model Master (MM) enamel flat black, then painted with MM enamels using a Badger 200 single action airbrush. The insides of all the parts were painted flat black to enhance the shadow effect and to prevent unpainted plastic from being visible. After painting was completed, the parts were blasted with Gunze Mr. Super Clear (gloss) to prepare for decals. I used a dark brown/grey enamel paint mix thinned with Testor's MM airbrush thinner to pin wash the entire model. Hardware store paint thinner was used to clean up the excess wash.

I used a combination of Satellite white stencil decals and Bandai's HGUC Zeon decal sheet to give the model a "busy" feel. Both decals worked okay, but the Bandai set tended to silver easily. After the decals dried, the model was wiped with a damp cloth, de-linted, then given one more coat of Mr. Super Clear to seal the decals. An airbrushed coat of Testors Dullcote finished off the model.

HGUC MS-06F Zaku II Model Kit Review 11These are the aftermarket decals I used for the build. The sheet on the upper left was actually for a 1/100 scale mobile suit of a different type, but the stenciled numbers were useful for this project. I used the white Satellite stencil decal sheet, but have shown the black one for photographic purposes.

Conclusion

Bandai's HGUC Zaku II looks great out of the box and builds relatively easily, with the exception of cleaning those damned power conduits. I thought the omission of rocket nozzles on the back pack was a little odd, but to be fair that is what the original TV version looked like. The monoeye modification was simple and went better than I expected and added a lot to the finished kit. The resin hands are a pretty expensive upgrade, but are worth it in my opinion. I highly recommend this kit to beginner and experts alike. Sieg Zeon!

Great Model. Wonderful articulation for how bulky it is and a nice simple kit for starters or even an advanced gunpla builder. Regardless, a great kit for its price.

This mobilesuit is the successful unit to the Zaku I. Cast in the classic zaku colors, you simply cannot go wrong with this kit. It's really easy to build, and looks even better with some simply panel lining! Great for any collection, or even better in a squad of 3! Get it, it's a most for any UC fans.

Personally, I love the Zaku. It's the ionic mobile suit of Zeon. It's simple and gets the job done. This kit is must for Zeon fans. It's really easy to put together, and looks pretty darn good when finished. Not much detail on it, but that's how it's supposed to be. One thing I should mention, it only comes with one sticker, which is the pink eye lens. It's a small sheet of paper, about the size of two nails. Don't lose it...like I did.

The Zaku II is a pretty simple kit and build, just as it was always a pretty simple mobile suit in any given show. However this isn't a disadvantage. The kit moves really well, especially for an early zaku and because of it's simple design and color it looks good unlined, doesn't take long TO line, and has a great many possibilities with personal painting and marking. It's a great kit to start doing gunpla with. Be sure to check out the gunpla starter kit too!
