Technology & Combat Characteristics

While the RGM-79 GM proved itself to be a highly capable MS, the introduction of Zeon's well armed and agile MS-09 Dom on Earth saw the need for a more maneuverable and better-performing mobile suit. A variant of the GM, the RGM-79D GM Cold Climate Type had increased thruster power and maneuverability, and some were modified for harsh climate conditions, most notably cold weather combat. The RGM-79D could be equipped with a variety of weaponry, including two types of 90mm machine gun, grenades, head-mounted vulcan guns, and beam sabers.

History

The RGM-79D was introduced late in the war, with at least three units assigned to Lieutenant Yu Kajima's MS combat testing squad. Yu Kajima's unit quickly proved the value of the new model GM in combat, destroying several Zeon mobile suits in defense of a Federation Forces base, including several MSM-03C Hygoggs and three Doms. Other units were deployed to guard important Federation Forces bases, such as the Arctic base where research and development of the RX-78NT-1 Gundam "Alex" was carried out.

1/144 HGUC RGM-79D GM Cold Districts Type Model Kit Reviews

The GM Cold Districts Type is a cool take on the GM Command. From the hit OVA Gundam 0080 "A War in the Pocket" the GM Cold Districts Type comes with a nice loadout of weapons including the Bullpup Machine Gun, Beam Saber and Shield. The model also comes with interchangable hands.

Bandai is doing a good job to switch up the plain old traditional suit with this Cold Districts variation, which has a much sleeker and edgier look than the original. Featuring a gun that resembles the Sten rather than the traditional beam spray gun and having more angular features, this model seems worlds apart from the original RGM-79. It of course is cast in full color and is snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to complete it.

Introduction

I have always been a fan of the cannon fodder mecha. Since the HGUC GM was already sold out by the time I got enough money to buy one, I ended up getting this one instead.

Head

The head is pretty well articulated, as well as being very detailed. The

clear camera visor distorts the inner plastic of the head, giving the

illusion of cameras and mechanics within the head itself. It also has

60mm vulcans, which need painting.

Arms

The arms are pretty well-designed, using plastic instead of polycaps to articulate the arms. The shoulders are pretty well detailed, especially the thruster vents which can move a little. However, the polycap in the shoulders seems to be tight that it can pop off the entire arm assembly from the torso if too much force is applied when posing the arms. The forearms have pegs to attach the shield on it via a U-brace.

There are 4 hands supplied: a right hand for the rifle, a right hand integrated with a beam saber, a closed left fist to grasp the shield and a open left hand. The hands seem to be made of a weaker type of plastic since the trigger finger of my GM's hand just broke off when I tried to attach the rifle. Also the integrated saber hand is an annoyance since the angle of which the beam saber is molded in is annoying to pose

with. The hands attach to the forearms via a polycap inside the forearm and are made of a dark gray finger part and a white back plate.

Torso

Pretty slick. Thanks to Katoki's redesign, the torso is more angled and the

sharp. The vents are very detailed and have a good sunken feel. The collar,

however restricts the left to right head movement by a bit. There are two pegs to attach the arms to.

The randsel (or backpack) has an attachment point for the beam saber hilt. The four verniers are pretty simple, and tend to fall out of the backpack if not glued on. Also, unlike the GM, there is no attachment point for the shield.

The waist is pretty standard. It attaches to the torso by means of a big peg that slides into a polycap at the base of the torso. The front skirt armor is reasonably articulated, but is also somewhat stiff. Some sanding will loosen it up. The side armors are also pretty decent, with good articulation. The back armor doesn't move, but it doesn't affect the leg poseability much.

Legs

Pretty standard. Basically a redesign of the original 0080 design, with sleeker lines and softer curves. The legs have thruster detail at the back of the calves, while the knee joint is somewhat double-jointed with a outer covering that simulates external tubing. Nice.

The feet are pretty well made, with a foot guard and heavy detailing on the

soles. They attach via a ball joint to the main leg assembly, with a part of the joint assembly sticking out of the back of the foot to simulate mechanics.

Weapons and Accessories

90mm machine gun- Well designed with lots of detail. It can be held two handed, and the ammo cartridge pops out so you can simulate a reloading pose. The stock is annoying though as interferes with the forearm. Some experimentation should get it position right though.

Beam saber- Molded in white and integrated with the right hand, the beam saber is pretty ugly. Some painting will do it some good, but the difficulty of painting the hand while avoiding the saber hilt isn't worth it in my opinion.

Shield- Similar to the GM's shield, but with no cross. Pretty sturdy when attached.

Conclusion

Pretty decent kit. However, the flaws mentioned above mar its otherwise well-engineered design.

The Mobile Suit

The introduction of the MS-09 Dom by the Zeon forces proved to the Federation that while the RGM-79 GM was a capable MS, it needed to field a more maneuverable and better-performing MS to match up with the Dom. Late in the War, the RGM-79D was introduced. The RGM-79D has increased power and maneuverability and is modified for extreme weather conditions with a specialization on cold climate.

The Kit

I am a GM phreak so ANY release of a GM variant is something I look forward to. The OAV series Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (0080) just happens to have some of the best designed GM variants. The original 0080 model kit line saw the release of the RGM-79G and RGM-19GS, a slight variation of the RGM-79D. The RGM-79D and the RGM-79SC GM Sniper II were only available as resin kits or resin conversion sets then. When Bandai announced the RGM-79D as part of their HGUC line, it was welcome news for me because this means the GM Sniper II is now a distinct possibility for a release in injection form. Anyway, here's a look at the RGM-79D.

The kit comes in three trees of colored parts, as per Bandai's practice. Parts breakdown for the HGUC series so far have been excellent. They allow the modellers to pretty much finish the kit in sub-assemblies, paint them and then do final assembly. Considering they are just 1/144 kits, the HGUC line's poseability has also generally been good. I also like the fact that the visor is a transparent green piece, saving me the time of having to paint it.

One thing I've noticed is that this kit will probably build up into a much bulkier version than the original anime version. That's not necessarily bad, but purists might have a problem with it. I don't. I think the proportions look tight, without the roundness of the HGUC RGM-79 and the huge waist of the original 0080 RGM-79G/GS model kits.

As with most HGUC kits, accessories are bare: a Sten-looking machine gun (which can be held with both hands... COOL), shield and a beam saber with the hand molded in. There are pros and cons to this: It does look better than the regular fist, but it's a pain to paint and choices of poseability with the beam saber is pretty much limited. Plus, you can only use the beam saber for the right hand (the beam saber hilt is on the left shoulder). However, this is easily remedied, as most Gundam modellers would have beam sabers lying around in the spares box anyway.

Bandai still refuses to include waterslide decals with their kits. This one comes with a sticker sheet, which naturally is too thick for any use if you do serious modelling. But, since the core audience for these kits is kids, a sticker sheet does make sense.

All in all, this looks to be a excellent kit and as mentioned above, this kit has since spawned a couple more variants from the 0080 world: namely the RGM-79G and RGM-79GS twins. Personally, I think that we can never have too many GMs. Bring them all on Bandai!
