Technology and Combat Characteristics

This new suit introduced before the Gryps Conflict by the Earth Federation Forces and the Titans was a truly revolutionary suit despite not being the strongest. The Asshimar was an experimental transformable mobile armor developed at the Oakland Newtype Lab. It was the first suit to be able to fly in the atmosphere of a planet on its own power without the help of a sub-flight system. The development of Asshimar was started by the Earth Federation Forces as the NRX-044[R] Prototype Asshimar TR-3 [Kehaar] and later continued in form of the NRX-044 Prototype Asshimar TR-3 [Kehaar].

It has additional sub mono-eye sensors along with the main sensor. Because its range was restricted to within the atmosphere, a thermonuclear jet engine as its main propulsion system. This system uses air for propellant, making it fuel-efficient while effectively giving the Asshimar a large cruising capacity. The engine air intakes are located on the upper thighs of the leg units which are mainly closed by shutters during MS mode. Additionally, its MA mode possesses excellent aerodynamics as a lifting body allowing for long-haul flights. The head unit is equipped with a multiple antenna rod and blade antenna provided with differential pressure sensors. The landing gear, which is provided in the chest armor and leg units, is used in conjunction with underside fuselage nozzles for hovering during take-off.

While not as powerful as its prototype, the production model of the Asshimar, which saw action during the Gryps Conflict was still a formidable machine. With magnet coating technology installed in the transformation system, the Asshimar was able to transform between its two modes in only 0.5 seconds. Also, it sported thick armor and was easily able to withstand most standard firearms used by mobile suits. However, the chest frame is left vulnerable to attack during transformation. The Asshimar was limited to fielding its custom beam rifle which was mounted on the main body in mobile armor mode, limiting its usefulness. Nevertheless the Asshimar proved to be a powerful, versatile, and deadly unit and was stationed on various Earth Federation bases on Earth.

Armaments

  • Large Beam Rifle - This custom beam rifle is unique to the Asshimar, it is able to fire single shots and burst shots. It was designed with aerodynamics in mind. It has high destructive power due to greater beam convergence rate.

History

Developed in the early part of the Gryps Conflict, the NRX-044 Asshimar's first known sortie was a single unit against attacking the Karaba-held Kennedy spaceport alongside regular military RMS-106 Hizack mobile suit riding on Base Jabbers subflight craft. The Asshimar piloted by Buran Blutarch proved very capable, easily out-maneuvering even the AEUG's advanced RX-178 Gundam Mk-II and MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki mobile suits. Though the Asshimar would be damaged and driven off thanks to inventive tactics, both Karaba and the AEUG would suffer heavy losses.

Buran Blutarch would continue using his Asshimar in pursuit of the AEUG's Garuda-class, launching his mobile suit from his own Garuda. The Asshimar would be destroyed on one of these missions and Buran killed inside it. One captured unit is used by AEUG ace Gabriel Zola to attack the Kamchatka base.

In the year UC 0088, during the First Neo Zeon War, several NRX-044 Asshimar mobile suits would be stationed at Earth Federation bases that would be captured by Axis Neo Zeon forces. This gave the Neo Zeon forces access to the Asshimar mobile suits.

The NRX-044 Asshimar mobile suit would still be used by the Earth Federation in the year UC 0090. Several units served as part of the Mobile Suit Air Force Company, one of which was piloted by company leader Broglie Ligera, a man who served as the pilot of an RB-79 Ball during the One Year War. Three of these Asshimars would be used to reinforce a supply base under attack from raiders using mobile suits. Broglie Ligera would duel a blue Gelgoog unit that he seems to recognize as being piloted by Uma Lightning. It is succeeded by the RAS-96 Anksha.

1/144 HGUC NRX-044 Asshimar Scale Model Kit Reviews

A cool transformable suit from Gundam Zeta the Asshimar comes in a unique orange and green color scheme and comes with a large Beam Rifle. Two cool features of this suit is that it can transform into Mobile Armor Mode and comes with it's own display stand for posing it in mid-air.

Neither the robot or the ship for looks very well when done. Hands need to be glued or they fall apart, shoulder joints droop and are very loose. I hope they make a robot only version, that is a true 1/144 scale, in the cartoon hes a head or 2 above the size of a gundam. just really disappointed considering this is one of my fav designs from the show.

I love *ALL* Gundam Action Figure Model Kits, but I'm more partial to 1/100 scale or Master Grade kits because of the amount of detail the increased surface area allows. HOWEVER, this is the first High Grade (1/144) model kit I've ever bought, and I love it, especially for the amount of detail they fit into it! If you love Gundam as much as I do, I recommend taking a look at other model kits from the HGUC (High Grade Universal Century) series including the Gabthley and the Gaplant.

No AEUG pilot is safe with this bad boy around... except for Kamille Bidan, but he's an exception.

History:

Appearing in the TV series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the NRX-044 Asshimar is a Mobile Suit (MS) built by the Titans that was able to fly in atmosphere without the aid of a sub-flight system (like the Dodai that Goufs flew around on in the One Year War). For high speed maneuvers, it can transform into a Mobile Armor (MA) configuration in a saucer shape. It has magnetic coating in its joints that reduce friction and allow it to move/ transform very quickly. It also has very thick armor, making it a tough nut to crack. Its biggest drawback is that due to its transformation ability, it is limited to only being able to carry a large beam rifle. This is a nice weapon, but without a melee weapon, the Asshimar has to keep a safe distance from its enemies.

The Model:

Zeta Gundam brought a wide range of transformable mobile suits into the Gundam story and the Asshimar has always been one of my favorites. This is because the transformation has always been very logical and sturdy-- making it very legitimate for a war machine. I love the VF-1 Valkyries as much as the next guy, but when you think about it, it's not perfect for stress and stability-- in Battroid mode for example, the Valkyrie's legs are attached to what is the nose cone of the plane mode! Yikes! OTOH, the Asshimar is very sturdy and utilitarian in its transformation-- just what you want in a combat mecha.

The model reproduces this transformation perfectly. Everything slides into place like a dream and is very sturdy. No flopping parts like on so many other kits. It even reproduces the Asshimar's "weakness" as shown in the TV show: when transforming from MA to MS, there is a split second where the two armor doors close over the chest to protect the fragile interior mechanisms. With his Newtype abilities, Kamille fires a shot into this opening at just the right moment to hurt the Asshimar-- a one in a million shot made by a one in a million pilot. On the model, the two armored doors open just like in the show, setting up cool possibilities with your HG AEUG mobile suits.

Obviously, this is a model, not a toy, and isn't meant to be played with-- but for display posing, it's perfect! It comes with a very nice stand to mount the finished model on. The stand has a movable joint on it that allows you to position your Asshimar in different positions, either in MS mode or MA mode. The stand even contains slots on the bottom to stow extra pieces like the MA holder, stand peg hole cover, and the extra "shooting" hand for when you want the Asshimar to hold its gun.

The coloring of the plastic is perfect and everything goes together like a dream. The antenna on the head is made of a more flexible material (like what some Gundam V fins are made of on some kits) that will bend pretty far before breaking. This is a good idea since the antenna gets moved between transforming modes, so it's safer from breaking. One other great feature is the inclusion of clear plastic to go over the mono eye sticker. This simulates the glass on the real mobile suit that protects the mechanics and rails that the mono eye moves around on. This is a great touch that adds more realism instead of just the typical mono eye sticker with no protective "glass".

I have been building Gundam models since 1981 (that is not a typo), so I've seen plenty of mecha kits. But I can honestly say that in my opinion, this is one of the best all around kits of any grade in any year.
