Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Zeta Gundam is a high-performance, next-generation MS developed by Anaheim Electronics in partnership with the Anti Earth Union Group.

In terms of weaponry, the Zeta is very well armed with an arsenal favoring beam weapons. It includes standard Gundam type armament including head mounted Vulcan guns, dual beam sabers, and a high powered beam rifle. It also sported arm mounted grenade launchers which could be given additional ammunition from detachable storage packs, and could also house a grappling tool for various purposes. The Zeta's most prolific weapon however is without a doubt the Hyper Mega Launcher, a massive rifle used to great extent in the latter parts of the Gryps Conflict and during the First Neo Zeon War. This weapon fires very high powered beam shots capable of destroying even battleships with a well placed shot. Both the launcher and beam rifle could also double as a cunning melee weapon as the launcher and beam rifle had a built in beam saber bayonet-style modes called the long beam saber. The beam rifle and Hyper Mega Launcher could be used while in Waverider configuration as well, and the hip mounted Beam Sabers doubled as beam guns in this mode.

Armaments

  • MU-86G 60mm Vulcan Gun - As with all mobile suits that trace their linage back to the RX-78-2 Gundam the Zeta Gundam features a head mounted vulcan gun system. The purpose of the vulcan guns is to serve as a mid-close range defensive weapon. While it can normally do little damage against the armor of a mobile suit it serves as a much more efficient and cost-effective as a means to shoot down incoming missiles, as opposed to using the beam rifle, the power of which would be over kill and if far more limited in ammunition. The vulcan guns are an offensive weapon designed to be used against small lightly-armored targets such as ground combat vehicles or attack helicopters. The 60mm vulcan guns are operable in mobile suit mode only.

  • 2-Tube Grenade Launcher - One of the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam's more unique weapons is a pair of 2-tube grenade launchers built into the mobile suit's forearms. The grenades are moderately powerful self-propelling explosives that can deal significant damage to a mobile suit or battleship, but are particularly effective against machines with heavy defenses against beam weapons. Each tube carries two rounds, meaning each grenade launcher carries four grenades, for a total of eight rounds that the MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam can use before needing to reload.

  • Grappling Wire - A Grappling Wire can be use as optional equipment that replaces the explosive warheads on the grenade launchers. It mainly used to immobilized the enemies, very suited to this Mobile Suit.

  • A.E.BLASH XB-G-35/Du.105 Beam Saber/Beam Gun - The beam saber is the standard close-combat melee weapon of mobile suits descended from the RX-78-2 Gundam. The pair employed by the Zeta Gundam are stored in hip recharge racks, are hand carried in use, and have a power rating of 0.65 MW. However the Zeta Gundam's beam sabers are unique in that in waverider mode the beam sabers double as fire-linked beam guns, partially extending from the recharge racks instead of fully deploying, with a total power rating of 1.3 MW.

  • (BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle - The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam is often outfitted with a unique (BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle. The XBR-M87A2 beam rifle is larger than most other models employed by other mobile suits and is powered by a replaceable e-pac, with a powerful power rating of 5.7 MW. The beam rifle is also capable of emitting a beam saber from its barrel, allowing the Zeta Gundam to use it as melee weapon should the situation call for it.

  • Grenade Launcher Cartridge - An optional piece of equipment that can be attached to the Zeta Gundam's grenade launcher. Holding 18+1 additional grenades the grenade launcher cartridge serves as an extended ammunition magazine for the grenade launcher.

  • FXA-03M2 Hyper Mega Launcher - When the Zeta Gundam needs greater firepower than its (BOWA) XBR-M87A2 Beam Rifle can deliver, it will be equipped with the hyper mega launcher. Looking like a "big brother" version of the beam rifle the hyper mega launcher is appropriately more powerful with a power rating of 8.3 MW. Like the beam rifle the hyper mega launcher is powered by a replaceable e-pac and can double as a large beam saber.

  • FF-XV-SH-609Z Shield - A standard defensive feature of most mobile suits is an arm-mounted shield. Originally a thick piece of extra armor designed to stop physical rounds, shield technology has been forced to adapt to the development of beam weapons by incorporating an anti-beam coating. The anti-beam coating allows shields to block energy beam attacks, however with each hit taken it gets worn down until rendered useless. The Zeta Gundam's unique shield serves as the machines nose in waverider mode.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Bio-Sensor - A technological variant of the Psycommu system developed by Anaheim Electronics. Although its full capabilities are unknown, its primary purpose is to allow a Newtype pilot to more easily interface with his mobile suit via mental commands. The bio-sensor could also have a rather surprising side effect when the pilot was mentally and emotionally focused enough (usually when angry or upset) to cause the bio-sensor to amplify the power, speed, and strength of the mobile suit for a short period of time.

History

The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam's design was originally used to build three prototypes; the MSZ-006-X1, the MSZ-006-X2, and the MSZ-006-X3 as part of Project Zeta. While these machines can transform, there is too much metal fatigue on the frame. This problem was corrected by Kamille Bidan, a Newtype teenager, incorporating innovations of that time such as the "movable frame" concept extracted by the Anti Earth Union Group from the Titans' RX-178 Gundam Mk-II project (headed by Franklin Bidan), and the Gundarium gamma alloy used in the RMS-099 Rick Dias.

The Ζeta's design was revolutionary in many ways (both in and out of the anime), and in the UC time-line looked very different from previous models of the Gundam type of Mobile Suit. The transformation ability and the suit's great speed is the Ζ's signature quality, as its transformation is fluid and integrated into it's combat style often giving it grace unrivaled by most MS. In the story of Gundam Sentinel, when the MSA-0011 S Gundam approaches the Base of Pezun, a commander replied there shouldn't be Mobile Suits like Zeta Gundam everywhere that have the high acceleration of a Mobile Armor but of the size of a Mobile Suit. While ironically, two MSZ-006C1 Ζeta Plus C1, a.k.a mass production Zeta Gundam units, are approaching behind S Gundam as a demonstration of how technological advances quickly shifts the form of war.

Kamille Bidan became the designated pilot of the Ζeta Gundam in the year UC 0087. Replacing Gundam Mk-II as his personal Mobile Suit, Kamille obtained the Ζeta Gundam after returning to space from the Hong Kong incident involving Four Murasame. Screaming into battle, this sleek convertible Mobile Suit took all of the Titan's forces by surprise with its incredible performance and attack potential. Kamille led many successful missions against the Titans and the AEUG turned the tide of the war. Kamille in the Ζeta was responsible for battling and ultimately killing Titans leader Paptimus Scirocco, besting his powerful mobile suit, the PMX-003 The O.

The AEUG pilot Fa Yuiry later recovered the Ζ Gundam along with its pilot. After undergoing repairs, the Newtype Judau Ashta became the principal pilot of this mobile suit while the mobile suit MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam was still under construction by Anaheim Electronics. When Judau received the ZZ, Federation pilot Roux Louka took control of the Ζ and used it to great success during the war against Neo-Zeon (though Judau occasionally traded mobile suits with Roux due to the Zeta being more maneuverable due to it's lighter weight). The Ζeta Gundam continued being in operation until its destruction at the end of the First Neo Zeon War, crippled by Ple Two's monstrous NZ-000 Queen Mansa, although the Ζeta got in one final crippling shot before being abandoned. The unit was recovered but never used again and is said to have been stored away along with all the other Mobile Suits belonging to the Gundam team on the Argama and the Nahel Argama-class Carrier secretly by Karaba, an anti-Earth Federation resistance group.

In Char's Counterattack - High Streamer, the unit was recovered after the end of the First Neo Zeon War and concealed along with the MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki by Federation Forces. According to Anaheim Journal, the Zeta Gundam was restored exclusively for the U.C. 00100 ceremony to perform flight demonstrations. In MS Graphica, a Zeta Gundam replica constructed by Anaheim Electronics is deployed for a special mission to combat the EARM terrorist group mobile armor, Leiurus, in U.C. 0097. This particular unit was piloted by freelance mercenary "Johnny" (callsign "Lightning").

An interesting feature of the Ζ Gundam is the incorporation of the plot device, a mysterious Bio-sensor - a reduced-feature replica of the Psychic Communicator (PSYCOMMU) system devised by Murasame Newtype Laboratories to interface Newtype pilots to mobile suits. The bio-sensor allowed a Newtype pilot to temporarily increase the combat power of the mobile suit by using psycho-kinetic energy inherently strong in Newtypes - its usage became more frequent during the last days of the first Gryps War between the AEUG and the Titans, even turning the Waverider into a deadly weapon (Kamille's attack using the Waverider to ram into Scirroco has been named the Waverider Crash in video games depicting the Zeta, such as the Super Robot Wars series). The Ζ Gundam was an incredibly high performance machine that accomplished much, helping turn the tide of the Titans conflict and fighting against Neo-Zeon afterwards. The Ζ however, was intricately tuned and built to Kamille's exact specifications and style, so once Kamille was out of the war while the Ζ could be piloted competently by other pilots, it could arguably no longer perform to its full potential without Kamille at the controls although it was still a highly formidable machine.

1/144 HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Model Kit Reviews

From the second series in the Universal Centuary comes the Zeta Gundam, the lead suit from the titular show. The 1/144 Z Gundam comes with full transformation abilities once assembled allowing you to convert it from Mobile Suit Mode to Waverider Mode with ease. The detail is excellent and the kit also comes with a Beam Saber, Beam Rifle and Hyper Mega Launcher. The kit is cast in full color and is snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to recreate the Zeta Gundam.

Review by Jameson Leaser

Introduction

I was apprehensive about this release. I was strongly hoping I wouldn’t have to endure another S-Gundam fiasco (releasing a transforming suit that DOES NOT TRANSFORM), yet, of all the original HG releases, the Zeta Gundam most gravely needed an update. The half-assed “Wave Shooter” they came up with irritated me, especially compared to the superb (in my not-at-all humble opinion) Master Grade release.

When I heard the kit was going to be “compartmentable” (meaning the suit’s transformation would be accomplished by disassembling the mobile suit and reassembling it in Wave Rider mode), I groaned. With visions of disappearing and/or breaking parts flashing through my head, I tentatively eyeballed the ad. The kit LOOKED like it was going to be in the tradition of the HGUC GM and Zaku (a anime-inspired remake that retains the practical functionality of the Master Grade release), and it also came with the Hyper Mega Launcher...

Head

The head, neck, and collar all pop off for the transformation, just like the original HG release. Of course, this head is a much better mold. It captures the more “sinister” aspect of the Zeta Gundam’s features. Blue foil stickers for the sub cameras on the head came as a surprise to me (I thought they’d be green). One more thing: you can’t make a “Zeta Zaku” right off the bat - sanding down the collar and slightly trimming down the ABS head-mount knob (or if you’re really good, replacing the ABS knob with part “K” on the polycap sprue) should do the trick, but I’m not keen on trying it out. Perhaps, If I were to get a second kit and dedicate that one to Waverider mode...

Torso

This is where the bulk of the transformation takes place in the anime. Realizing this in 1/144 scale in a manner that would not only be true to the original design but be able to handle repeated transformations was the challenge. The HGUC team solved this by providing two central blocks - a torso for Mobile Suit mode and a fuselage for Waverider mode - to attach the various removable sections to.

The result is a kit that actually looks good in both MS and WR modes without having to resort to near-microscopic transformation parts (I’ve built the original High Grade, coating version Master Grade and the Perfect Grade incarnations of this kit, and even at 1/60th scale there are still a ton of little pieces needed to make something as complex as the Zeta Gundam’s transformation work). The blue “hood” (like the hood of a car) and back of the Zeta Gundam’s torso comes off, along with the tail binder, and attaches to the WR fuselage.

The wing binders (attached on long sticks to the MS torso) also come off and attach to the WR block. A note about the wings: All of the wing binder except for the wings themselves is molded in dark purplish-gray, with the wings molded in red. This provides many opportunities for difficulty in color matching as there is red on the wing binder and that dark color on the wings. It occurs to me, looking at the kit now, they could have added Gundam or Zaku II-style super-articulated shoulders to the MS torso block, though the kit poses fine without them.

Arms

Due to the compartmentable nature of this kit, no transformation occurs at all with the arms - they remain attached to the MS torso block. They’re good HGUC arms, though...

Legs

Transformation of a sort actually takes place here, though the cover over the heel thruster needs to be moved for it to happen. They attach in a standard ball-and-socket method to the MS torso, though the WR fuselage has curious (but effective) nubs. The hip and rear plates detach and fit on the WR fuselage.

Weapons and Accessories

The Hyper Mega Launcher is blue? I was not aware of that - I’ll have to keep my eyes open when I pick up those Zeta Gundam DVD's. A great thing to see in 1/144th scale. Landing feet are included for this weapon (though not for the Zeta itself). The long beam rifle is almost fully articulated. The targeter doesn’t fold down and the tab used to attach the weapon to the Waverider doesn’t fold in, which makes the weapon somewhat difficult to pose in MS mode.

The grenade packs are extremely simple one-piece hollow plastic jobs, and the firing bays in the forearms don’t open (the beam saber mounts don’t open either). The non-clear integrated beam-saber hand (a la Gundam Mk-II) is a disappointment, though a minor one as it‘s molded in a light-painting friendly color (I chopped that beam saber blade off and replaced it with one of my many many spare Gundam beam saber blades). A set of foil stickers is included for all the little yellow lights appearing on the Zeta Gundam, though if you plan to fool with it for any length of time, I’d suggest the time-consuming chore of painting them on.

Conclusion

I’ll say this up front: the best Zeta Gundam kit out there is the Master Grade kit. Sure, the Perfect Grade kit has more detail and isn’t quite so floppy (though it does get that way pretty quick), but the MG Zeta’s got all the options, looks cool, and even comes with a light-up part (unless you get the coating version as I did - you lose the lights on the tail binder but you get a Kamille Bidan figure). The close second is this HGUC kit. Different enough so that it’s not like you’re buying the same kit in miniature (as with the GP03S) and with all the options of the MG Zeta, it’s a great choice for collectors, and with all the Zeta Gundam HGUC and other 1/144th kits out there, a great choice for diorama modelers, too. The compartmentable system is well done (I hope one day a compartmentable option parts set becomes available for the HGUC S and Ex-S Gundams) and it gives me a lot of hope for future Zeta-series transformable HGUC releases. Following the pattern began in 2001 with the Gundam, furthered with 2002’s Gundam Mk-II and strengthened by this release, I strongly suspect the Double Zeta Gundam’s HGUC release before the end of this year.

Review by Zeonindo

First i bought a new kit, well not much new cause this thing is an item from a long time production HGUC Zeta Gundam. I bought this thing actually cause my The 0 was kinda lonely at the shelf, his big fat body looks very odd and empty at that shelf ^^ Well, he needs his immortal rival, The flawles mobile suit ever build...Zeta Gundam.

The package is arrived at noon, I was happy at that time, this is my favorite kit when I was a kid, red blue bad*ss mobile suit with an emo pilot boy with unlucky destiny.

Hardly believe that this kit is came from 1999, mint in plastic wrap, in a good condition and a superb color. And different from the other kit, the manual book is wrapped in a plastic sheet, a painted build photo cover from the kit with a black background.

The wave rider mode is become my first interest in this kit, do this kit can actually transform? the answer is yes, it can transform to wave rider mode, but, it can`t barely transform from mobile suit mode to wave rider mode just like a master grade version, we need to separate each part and re-assemble it to a new part as a main holder of the wave rider mode, well...kinda s*cks :(

But chill out, this one is not too bad, cause this kit actually came with several weapon that we can used it as an attachment to the wave rider, the weapon included a beam rifle and a big blue bad*ss bazooka.

So, the question is, where the rest of the suit gone? this is the answer, since it seperated from the other part that makes a wave rider mode, this part is stand alone. You can reused it if you need to transform the kit into a mobile suit mode.

And this is the look of the mobile suit mode, perfect proportion came with a good color, still looks good if you let it plain and don`t want to paint it. And looks like The 0 had a companion now, his trully enemy AEUG Mobile Suit MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam.

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 1Hey guys, today's review is the HGUC Zeta Gundam Extra Finish, and it was my first limited/special version of a kit. So on to the review!

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 2The MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam should need no introduction. It was the titular mobile suit in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and was designed by the newtype pilot Kamille Bidan. It was the first transformable Gundam and incorporated the Movable Frame technology and Bio-Sensor. Part of the 'Z' Project, the Zeta would eventually spawn various other units throughout UC(ReGZ, ReZel, etc).

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 3The Zeta Gundam is an awesome design, and stood out from the other Gundams such as the RX-78-2 and the Gundam MK.II. Its face I think stood out the most as it didn't have the colored chin/goatee on the face. The kit itself is nice, and the Extra Finish works. Its not overly shiny, and the metallic look works.

The articulation on the Zeta Gundam isn't bad. Its your standard HG articulation. The head is on a ball joint and allows for the head to look side to side, up and down. The arms are attached to the body via pegs and can rotate forward and back. The arms have a 90 degree bend and the wrists can wiggle around as they'r on a ball joint. The body has no articulation except chest which can swing up, but that's for transforming it so it doesn't do anything for the pose-ability of the kit. The body is attached to the waist via a ball joint so it can rotate around and wiggle about. The waist has no articulation, and the legs attach via a ball joint. The legs can bend a bit over 90 degrees and can swing forward and back. Being a ball joint connection the legs can't swing outwards much. The feet are on a ball joint and have basic movement because of it. The toes can bend completely down but that's for the transformation. The wings are attached on pegs in the back and can move a bit. Overall its a solid kit and doesn't feel flimsy. Articulation isn't outstanding but its certainly much better than something like the Rick Dias.

Weapons

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 4The Zeta Gundam is well armed, packing a beam rifle, beam sabers, grenade launchers, a shield, and the the deadly hyper mega launcher.

Beam Rifle

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 5The beam rifle carried by the Zeta Gundam is like any other beam rifle. It runs on E-Pacs which serve as the ammo clip, but this being the HG, they're molded onto the rifle. Its a simple beam rifle, but it still looks pretty cool. The tab on the bottom of the rifle is used to attach it to the back in Waverider. The beam rifle should also be able to retract for when in waverider, but this one can't. It should also be able to hold a beam blade at the tip as in the anime it can be used as a Bayonet style beam rifle. I haven't actually tried it with this kit though.

Grenade Launchers

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 6The Zeta Gundam has grenade launchers on both arms. Additional grenades can be added via grenade packs that attach to the side of the arms. There's really not much else to mention about them, except the little grenades themselves cannot be seen; unlike the MG version were you can open the little tabs to reveal the grenades.

Beam Saber

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 7The Zeta Gundam has 2 beam sabers which are stored on the side skirts and double as beam guns in waverider form. Unfortunately this kit doesn't bring individual beam saber handles or beam blades. Instead this kit brings an extra hand with the beam saber molded onto it. Because this is the extra finish, the beam saber doesn't look half bad even unpainted.

Shield

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 8The shield the Zeta brings is definitely one of the more unique shields any Gundam has in my opinion. The shield doubles as the nose cone of the Zeta in waverider form, and normally can retract to be shorter like the Mk.II's shield. Unfortunately that gimmick is only found on the MG. Outside of that, its a pretty cool shield.

Hyper Mega Launcher

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 9Last but not least, the Zeta's Hyper Mega Launcher. The Zeta's fire power grew considerably once it was given this weapon, and it could pretty much take down anything with a well placed shot. Heck, it could even be used as a beam saber just like the beam rifle could. On the kit itself, its only a few parts, but it does have handles on the sides that can swing out, and the barrel can extend when being used. It can also be attached to the shield.

Waverider

HGUC MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam Review 10The Zeta was the first fully transformable Gundam, so that gimmick was of course reproduced on the model kit forms. Unfortunately because this is a 1/144 HG, a total transformation without swapping any parts is very hard to do(though as I'm writing this, we're all expecting the recently announced RG Zeta to be fully transformable and not a parts-former). As a result when transforming it you need to take it apart and swap some parts.

The transformation is rather simple. Once broken apart, the body/arms/waist is replaced with an empty part, where everything is attached to. The beam rifle and hyper mega launcher can be attached to the waverider, and the hyper mega launcher can even have landing gears attached to it. Being a parts-former, everything feels secure and stable. The drawback of this, is also a plus compared to the MG. The MG Zeta 2.0 is fully transformable and feels secure as well. However the transformation is a bit complicated/annoying. With this one, its a simple process and looks good.

Overall Thoughts

Pros

-Good fun build, a bit more involved than the average HG.

-Solid kit, not wobbly or falling apart.

-Good amounts of extras, the Hyper Mega Launcher especially.

-Shiny!

Cons

-Parts-former, but only because it means you have some parts to keep track off.

-Gimmicks found on the actual Gundam/ MG version are not reproduced fully in the HG like:

  • Retractable shield.

  • Retractable beam rifle.

  • Opening grenade launcher tabs on the arms.

  • Wings are already semi-open, instead of fully closed.

They're not huge cons, considering there is only so much detail/gimmicks that can be put on a HG.

Overall, I'd say this is a great kit. Its got good articulation and can hold various poses. Being a special finish kit, it is exposed to the dangers of ugly cut marks scratching the special finish, but this one isn't terrible like the titanium finishes. The finish is also good. Its not too bright/shiny, it works. I actually got this kit in my GSaM platinum member items. So all in all, I'd definitely recommend this kit, any of them(there's quite a few: regular, gloss finish, clear, extra finish etc). Also, the kit doesn't bring any markings/seals besides the foil stickers. I used some of the left over water slides from my MG Mk.II 2.0. You should be able to pick up the regular version for around $20 probably; so its not too expensive.

This model kit surprised the hell outta me. First of all it took me a shockingly long time. Normally I bang out HG models in 90 minutes, however this one took me about 4 hours. The amount of detail in the pieces makes painting almost unnecessary. One thing I will say is the guns are molded in blue and did not look realistic at all, so those require some painting. Other than that though this was an AMAZING kit. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants an easy to build but insanely great looking Gundam.

Quality: 2/5

I was originally hopeful the HGUC Zeta would be a good model. And in MS mode it looks very nice. However because of its transforming its knees are weak and tend to collapse. Also being a part former the replacement parts for the core and chest require detailed painting to look like the parts removed.

This model can be improved with work and paint. But out of the box it is a disappointing model.

first off its the Zeta gundam. it can even turn into jet mode! some parts could use some more detail but its nothing difficult to add. its well balanced and pretty durable for being a plastic assembly kit.
