Technology & Combat Characteristics

This transformable mobile weapon was developed by the Augusta & Oakland Research Institutes as a space-use mobile suit, but it also proved to be highly efficient in atmospheric flight. The Gaplant proved to be one of the fastest and most agile mobile weapons when in mobile armor mode and thanks to its active thruster units it was able to change direction during flight without the need of changing the direction of its nose. However because of the extreme G-forces which pressed on the pilot during high speed flight, the Gaplant could only be used by the physically toughest humans or by an enhanced cyber-Newtype. Another problem was its high fuel consumption. Because of this the Gaplant was equipped with an external booster in MA form when it needed to fly longer distances.

A unique feature of the Gaplant is that is possesses two cockpit hatches. The first is the standard mobile suit hatch located in the middle of the torso, which is the hatch used in mobile suit mode. The second hatch is used only while the Gaplant is in mobile armor mode and is located in the back of the head. The reason for the second hatch is because the first hatch is inaccessible when in mobile armor mode.

Armaments

  • Beam Rifle - The standard ranged armament of the many mobile suits is the beam rifle. The particle beam fired from a beam rifle can penetrate almost any armor that has not been treated with specific counter-measures. The ORX-005 Gaplant is equipped with two beam rifles which are mounted on the arms as part of the active thruster units. Unlike most beam rifles of the day the Gaplant's draw energy straight from its reactor as opposed to an E-Pac.

  • Beam Saber - The standard close range armament for most Titans mobile suits. The beam saber is a small cylindrical device held in the mobile suit's hands when operated and is powered by an energy capacitor that is recharged from special racks. The beam saber is capable of cutting through any metal that has not been treated with anti-beam coating. The Gaplant is equipped with a pair of Beam Sabers, and can only be used in MS mode.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Optional Booster - While the thrusters allow the Gaplant to attain incredibly high acceleration, they consume fuel at a high rate. To compensate, the Gaplant can be equipped with a pair of Optional Booster in MA mode, which substantially increase the amount of fuel the Gaplant can carry, thus increasing the mobile suits operational flight time. When the fuel is depleted, the booster can be ejected to decrease mass.

History

Although it isn’t known how many Gaplants were produced only two units were seen. The first was used by cyber-Newtype Rosamia Bidan during her attack on the Audhumla after the AEUG’s attack on the Jaburo base and the second unit was used by Titan pilot Yazan Gable who used his unit in space.

In U.C.0203, Gaplant became remains of a past mobile suit, and it arrived at the southern island. Afranche Char determined to see it and to fight.

1/144 HGUC ORX-005 Gaplant Model Kit Reviews

The HGUC Gaplant is a monster of a kit. In Mobile Suit mode it's sleek proportions and mechanical detail make it look intimidating and powerful, and in Mobile Armor mode the Gaplant becomes a master of the skies. The Gaplant comes with all the parts needed to build the suit, the giant Booster pack, Beam Sabers, Movable shield binders and a free stand for posing the model in mid air! This is definitely an impressive High Grade.

Featuring enhanced transformation gimmicks and an included display stand, this kit is ready to pose! Its main weapons are the massive shoulder cannons, but an extra beam saber is also included. The kit is of course pre-colored and snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to complete it.

Durability: 4/5

Fun: 4/5

A mech from Zeta Gundam that transforms into a 'mobile armor' vehicle, I like the Gaplant for its ability to pull off crazy midair maneuvers with the thrusters attached to its arms. So I went out and bought this, my very first transforming model kit. With most of the parts molded in color and with stickers included, only minimal painting is needed. Even if you don't paint some parts, like the red rockets, most of them are concealed by the Gaplant. And every limb holds up pretty well in the posing process, though the head is impossible to move with those bulky shoulders in the way. Once you get the hang of it, the model's transformation to MA mode is pretty straight forward. My biggest concern is that the Gaplant attaches to an included display base with a small, hard polycap in the torso, bringing its durability into question. The Gaplant also includes a large optional booster (for atmospheric flight), a smaller base for support, a pair of beam sabers, and an instruction booklet.

Note: This product is not a toy. Rough play will damage the product. This product is recommended for ages 8 and up: Small Parts.

Value: 5/5
Quality: 5/5
Design: 5/5

I really loved the Gaplant from Zeta Gundam, and since there was no MG kit (outside of the garage kits) I decided to go for the HGUC kit. It's a pretty beastly size, standing just short of my MG Zaku IIs, and even a little bit above them on the base included in the kit.

While I like the design of the Gaplant, I felt this kit fell a little short. While it does the transformation rather nicely, I still felt nervous moving it around to transform it into the mobile armor mode. Even when it was transformed, it somehow felt more fragile than in its mobile suit configuration. The arms were a bit of a disappointment as well, given that the hands can barely reach the handles for the shield-beam cannons.

Still, I do think the Gaplant looks pretty sharp. There isn't much articulation, but I'm not too surprised given that it's got such an odd design and is an HGUC to boot. It comes with its own base, as well as a rocket booster, both of which are pretty great add ons. Although you can pose the Gaplant on the base, it really is meant for the mobile armor mode, and leaves it hanging kind of awkwardly in the mobile suit form.

Still, I think it's a pretty neat kit and definitely worth the money.
