Technology & Combat Characteristics

After Lt. Wes Murphy's Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] is heavily damaged in combat with Zeon remnants, it is repaired and improved using a RGM-79Q GM Quel stationed at Konpeitoh and spare Hazel parts stored aboard the Aswan. This "Hazel Custom" reflects the combat data and development know how accumulated by the original Hazel. The machine's enhancement parts, which previously seemed like an afterthought, have been better balanced with the other parts and the machine's internal structure to make it a more complete mobile suit. As a result, its external appearance has a more unified feel, and its lighter weight and increased thruster output give it roughly 10% greater acceleration.

A 360-degree panoramic monitor and linear seat system have been installed in its cockpit on an experimental basis, and its operating system has also been upgraded, so this machine's operation is greatly advanced from the original Hazel. The model number of this rebuilt Hazel has been shifted from RX-121 to RX-121-1. Because the Hazel's unique shield boosters were lost in its previous battles, the Hazel Custom is equipped with a normal shield for the time being. The loss of the shield boosters admittedly reduces the Hazel Custom's mobility, but its overall performance increase is enough to make up for this. Due to its redeployment schedule there wasn't time to repaint the machine in Titans colors, so most of its armor remains the grey color in which it was molded.

The Hazel Custom's basic specs, including its generator and thruster performance, are similar to those of the GM Quel. Its leg sections house thermonuclear rocket engines with an output of 17,500 kg apiece, and its backpack is equipped with the same movable booster pod as the original Hazel. The thermonuclear reactor inside this pod serves as both a supplemental generator and a hybrid jet/rocket engine, with an output of 390 kW and 18,000 kg respectively. The Hazel Custom retains the support actuator units and enhancement parts of the original Hazel, and can carry all the same equipment.

A multi weapon latch can be plugged into its center skirt armor to support options like a sub arm unit or a flexible beam rifle unit, and another multipurpose latch is located above its cockpit hatch. While the Hazel Custom's High Mobility Form is identical to that of the original Hazel, its Assault Form is equipped with the same booster pod used by the RMS-117 Galbaldy β High Mobility Type, rather than the Hazel's usual movable booster pod. Two shield boosters are attached to this booster pod, and the mobile suit is also equipped with the Galbaldy β's extendable shield.

1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Custom] Scale Model Kit Reviews

The first mecha from the Advance of Zeta side story is a great HG kit and a great precedent for later AOZ HGUCs! This one has a shield, beam saber with effect part and beam rifle, on top of sporting an overall beefier look and an awesome booster shield, and lots of decals for the Titans Test Team (T.T.T.).

One of the first of many Gundam kits I've built. Fell in love with the easier kits at first and progressed into the more challenging MG kits. A bit pricey, but worth it for the detail and sheer pleasure of the build.

This is a Titans Test Team variant from the Universal Century timeline. Mecha design is typical UC style. Being a High Grade kit it does not have an inner frame but the external detailing is very good. A coat of paint will help give the kit a realistic feel but just like all HGUC kits major components are cast in correct color. Foil stickers and dry transfer decals come with the kit. Design features that stand out are the large shield and beefed up legs. I think it looks good :)

Can't say enough good things about this little guy. Like the other reviewer says, it does look chunky but it is actually quite flexible, allowing you to put it in some great poses. There's also quite a bit of small details on the kit which really stand out with some basic shading or painting. I highly recommend this thing.

This is a great gunpla. The double jointed arms give you great motion and sets up some great poses. The only problem I have with this gundam is that the blue pieces come molded in black. This kit rquires a little bit of painting and is a great buy for any collection.

My wife bought this kit for me for Christmas and I'm just now finishing it up. It's one of my favorite suit designs and Bandai did a great job with this kit. It's really well articulated for a suit with such chunky armor. It's a blast to build and painting it really brings out the details in this bad boy. Now I wanna find a translated copy of the story that it's from. Pick this one up, you won't be disappointed.

+ Points :

  • The only Hazel Custom kit produced by Bandai

  • Comes with clear sticker

  • A lot of detail for a HG kit

- Points :

  • Leg articulation is rubbish

  • Some parts are loose and will fall off (especially the hand)

  • The only Hazel Custom kit

1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom Model Kit Review 1Coming from the Advance of Zeta novel, after After Lt. Wes Murphy's Gundam TR-1 [Hazel] is heavily damaged in combat with Zeon remnants, it is repaired and improved using spare parts of a Quel and a Hazel stored aboard the Aswan.

This "Hazel Custom" reflects the combat data and development know how accumulated by the original Hazel, therefore, the model number of this rebuilt Hazel has been shifted from RX-121 to RX-121-1. The machine's enhancement parts have been better balanced with the internal structure to make it a more complete mobile suit. 1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom Model Kit Review 2Because the Hazel's unique shield boosters were lost in its previous battles, the Hazel Custom is equipped with a normal shield for the time being. The loss of the shield boosters admittedly reduces the Hazel Custom's mobility, but its overall performance increase is enough to make up for this. Due to its redeployment schedule there wasn't time to repaint the machine in Titans colors, so most of its armor remains the grey color in which it was molded.

Personally, I think the Titans were a bunch of dicks, but I can’t negate that the mobile suit variations from Advance of Zeta are simply put, the sexiest ones I’ve ever seen (where’s my HGUC RX-124 TR-6 [Woundwort], Bandai?!). So, I decided to give a shot to this Hazel Custom.

1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom Model Kit Review 3After working with the MG Crossbone X-5 I built, once again I decided to use some paint on this model, as the gray color it comes was not much of my liking. The work was simple; apply a coat of primer on all the gray parts and then one of white paint. I did the same for the little yellow parts. For the black parts, the paint applied directly works fine.

As for my own flaws… ouch, excuse those bubbles on the marking decals of the shields, and also the panel lines, since I have not worked on something like them since a year and a half ago -_-.

1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom Model Kit Review 4For its size, this model is quite articulated actually, you can even pose him as if reaching for the beam saber with no problems at all!

In the accessories issue, it comes obviously with two shields, a normal one (of which I lost one of those button silver things -_-) and the booster shield that can be either attached to the forearm as a standard shield or in the back for additional thrust. It comes also with a beam rifle and 3 cartridges for it, 2 of them can be attached to the hips. Finally, the standard beam saber with (argh, yet AGAIN) a pink energy blade.

1/144 HGUC RX-121-1 Gundam TR-1 Hazel Custom Model Kit Review 5The model comes also with a total of 3 hands, one for the left hand and two for the right one. However, I had to use some superglue for the hand designed for the beam rifle, as for some unknown reason the parts didn’t fit by themselves.

I was surprised by the weight of this kit once assembled, making it feel quite solid. In the end, I would totally recommend it despite the massive amount of detailing it needs (yellow, red on the fingertips…) as for the 15 bucks it cost me you get one very nice model to work with.

Review by Clem-Master-Janitor

Introduction

Time for another part of the Advance of Zeta family, the Hazel Custom. I’ve discussed how the Advanced Hazel stacked up. Now it’s time for the simpler version of this Hazel to face the music. Good, bad, or somewhere in between? Let’s find out.

Head

It’s the standard Gundam-esque head with a great range of motion thanks to the way the ball joint polycap sits in the head. It’s mohawk sensor lights make it stand out with the v-fin antennae. This design works very nice when you paint as the sensor bit can be pulled and worked on separate from the rest of the head until you need to put it all together for final assembly. The v-fin can be easily removed, allowing for a person to take parts from the Advanced Hazel and install them, if you really like that sensor package.

Arms

Good movement in the joints. The recurring flaw rears its ugly head in the hands’ ABS plastic failing to hold at all. The beam rifle often pops the pegs, sending the tiny thumb flying off. You’ll end up gluing it or buying the aftermarket Manipulator Upgrade from B-Club, which you also have to glue. Painting of the nails is necessary to give that proper Titan Test Team look.

Torso

The torso is rather nice with the white and black scheme versus the blue and black. More details appear that really add to the kit. The high mobility handle bars are present on this kit, but the option of equipping the grenade launcher bits are a nice addition. You’ll have a bit of painting to get the small details to look correct (if you’re painting to make the kit look like the instructions direct) but are much easier to do thanks to the light base color scheme.

The booster pod is similar in function to the Advanced Hazels (a single slide allows the support arm to raise and lower the pod according to where you want it to sit) with the difference being the pod is larger and actually equipped with boosters (versus being a point to attach the shield boosters). Only one shield booster is capable of being attached at a time versus the two for the Advanced Hazel. Again, painting is required for the booster pod to look its best.

Legs

The skirt armor holds spare ammo clips for the beam rifle and a rear skirt armor reminiscent of the Gundam NT-1 with all the tiny little thrusters. The pelvic area has a detachable plate allowing for some one to take the manipulators from the Advanced Hazel and transport them to this kit. Why, I don’t know, but you can do it. There may be other future add-ons available to equip to the skirt area but not at this moment.

Lower legs are huge but very stable due to the heavy weight of the leg thruster parts. No need to worry about dumping this kit off its display area. A lot of flex allows great poses and no manipulator arms for the skirt armor increases the amount of poses you can attempt. Great details are visible here that were lost in the blue and black Advanced Hazel. And, as always, you need to do some fine tuning painting to really make the kit’s hidden details pop.

Weapons and Accessories

You get the standard fare for a Hazel Gundam: beam rifle, beam saber with translucent red beam insert, spare grenade launchers to swap out the shoulder bars, a GM shield, a booster shield (shallow panel lines make detailing a pain in the ass), and two ammo clips.

Conclusion

All in all, this is a great kit, especially if you put together the Advanced Hazel beforehand. Not as bulky or cumbersome, all the details are well defined and visible (mostly) with a little extra paint work. I’ve had many comments and read many more that this kit is very detailed compared to the standard HGUC kit, almost on par with a MG.

Something else that is great about this kit is the ability to swap parts with the other kits in the Advance of Zeta line (Hazel II, Advanced Hazel, Quel, Hrairoo, Hazel Custom) plus combined with parts from the Titan’s Gundam Mk. II to create various designs that don’t have model kits. Of course this can be a very expensive venture for some of the kits, but how can you not love the idea of having your own, unique, Hazel unit?

But, back on the topic, this is a superior kit to the Advanced Hazel. It looks good, poses great, and only has a few flaws common to HGUC kits at the moment. Go pick one up and you’ll see what I mean.
