Technology and Combat Characteristics

The MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II is a product of the United Maintenance Plan and an upgraded version of the already exceptional MS-09R Rick Dom. Because it was originally developed for space combat, its armor and overall form are shaped into flat surfaces as air resistance is nonexistent in space. Its main improvements were overall increased thruster acceleration, along with the addition of more attitude control verniers for improved maneuverability. Because of the increased fuel consumption, the Rick Dom II's producer, Zimmad, added a pair of external propellant tanks to allow the Rick Dom II to operate in the field longer.

Armaments

  • Scattering Beam Gun - A chest mounted scattering beam gun. Does little damage to enemy mobile suits but can be used to blind enemy pilots for several seconds. The output of the chest beam cannon has been increased, improving its reliability as a weapon.

  • Heat Saber Type7 - The Rick Dom features an improved version of the Dom Type2 heat saber. Though not as powerful as the Federation mobile suits' beam saber it still has the power to quickly cut the titanium alloy of a GM. The heat saber is battery powered and stored on a back recharge rack.

  • 360mm Giant Bazooka - The primary weapon of the Rick Dom is a large bazooka. The bazooka is magazine-fed and holds 10 rounds per mag.

  • MMP-80 90mm Machine Gun - As part of the United Maintenance Plan, new weapons were produced. They could be paired by numerous weapons such as the MMP-80 90mm machine gun. The machine gun is magazine-fed with 32 rounds per mag.

  • 880mm Raketen Bazooka - A new heavy bazooka that uses a five round mag.

  • Sturm Faust - A hand-held rocket propelled grenade that is good for a single shot. Zeon mobile suits were often equipped with at least one Sturm Faust during the One Year War. It was designed before the beginning of the One Year War as an anti-ship weapon. Stored on waist armor storage racks. Used mainly for anti-ship attacks during the early days of the war the Sturm Faust likely made a good anti-mobile suit weapon during the latter days has Zeon mobile suits could be equipped with both a Sturm Faust and a second more standard ranged weapon giving giving them great versatility.

Special Equipment & Features

  • External Ejectable Propellant Tanks

History

Very late in the One Year War, the Principality of Zeon launched their United Maintenance Plan to upgrade and improve existing mobile suit designs, and to streamline its own manufacturing capabilities. Several new mobile suit designs were produced from this, including the MS-09RII Rick Dom II.

The Rick Dom II is an improved version of the MS-09R Rick Dom, a space-use version of the MS-09 Dom both of which the Principality of Zeon introduced during the latter part of the One Year War, and had a significantly higher performance. The redesign put the mobile suit on more even terms with the advanced mobile suits being deployed by the Earth Federation and even the Principality's own MS-14 Gelgoog. It was designed very late in the war, therefore very few units were produced.

Despite being built in limited numbers several of the MS-09RII Rick Dom II mobile suits participated in skirmishes with Earth Federation Forces stationed at Side 6 during the month of December of UC 0079, the last month of the One Year War. These skirmishes had little overall strategic value and were carried as part of an operation to discover and destroy an advanced Earth Federation mobile suit, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam "Alex", that the Zeon military had tracked from a Federation Antarctic base.

A number of MS-09RII Rick Dom II units that did survive the One Year War made it to the Delaz Fleet, and took part in Operation Stardust. However, some of those units had slightly fewer thrusters, possibly due to the unavailability of replacement parts for the mobile suits. The design of the MS-09RII Rick Dom II is later carried over in the development of Axis' AMX-009 Dreissen.

1/144 HGUC MS-09R-2 Rick Dom II Model Kit Review

A retooling of the classic Dom suit, the Rick Dom from Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is an awesome kit featuring a high level of poseability and a nice array of weaponry. Much like all suit sequels, this Rick Dom II features more detail over the original, doing away with some of the more bulbous parts. It comes with an upgraded bazooka and a machinegun, and also features the classic heat saber and an extra grenade, just in case those first three aren’t enough! The kit is cast in full color and is snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to complete it.

Review by Jameson Leaser

Introduction

It’s about time they got around to this release. A major player in the last half of Gundam 0083 and a bit player it it’s “home” series of Gundam 0080 (which, by the box colors, this kit belongs to), this suit had at least three different color schemes and weapons loadouts (qualities the recast-happy HGUC team seems to fancy), so I was curious just how they’d handle this. It seems they went for the second version Gundam 0080 colors (MG Rick Dom colors, that is), Gundam 0080 main weapons (both versions), and a 0083 heat saber for good measure.

Head

I’m reminded of Darth Vader’s helmet whenever I look a plastic version of the Rick Dom II’s head. Bigger and rounder than the HGUC Dom Tropen’s, it’s also slightly more complex. The clear mono-eye part featured on earlier Gundam 0080 HGUC releases and 1/144th scale models is absent here, nor is there separate decals for the black background and mono-eye like the HGUC Dom Tropen. Instead, there is a piece of clear plastic which fits over the decal rather like a Master Grade head. I suppose you can see this as a concession to the 0083-era kits while trying to be in the spirit of the 0080-era kits.

Torso

A standard high-quality HGUC torso, superior in all regards to the original 0080 kit. The skirt thruster problem was solved differently than the Dom Tropen’s, more than likely due to the fact that the Rick Dom II has five rockets under there versus three. The thruster assembly is a detailed plate which the five rocket nozzles attach to, attached to the rear skirt with a polycap. Since the only time you really see them is when you turn the kit over, this solution is (in my not-at-all-humble opinion) very effective.

Arms

Different proportions from the Dom Tropen, especially the hands, which were both bigger and simpler. No open hand was included in this release, making the Core Fighter command module-under-the-arm pose from Gundam 0083 rather difficult. For further comments about under-arming, see below...

Legs

Great HGUC-level bell-bottoms on this bad boy. No issues here.

Weapons and Accessories

The “56” (or “95”, if you’re nasty) decal belongs, anime-wise, on the green-toned “colony-attack” (or, if you prefer as I do, Marine) version of this kit, the heat saber belongs with the MG Dom-colored 0083 version.

The two panzer fausts included with this kit are really lovely, far superior to the desert Dom Tropen’s (HGUC 027) sturm fausts. The two-part warhead assembles up and down, not side-to-side as with the sturm faust, and is molded in luscious 0080 red (a pleasant surprise), joining smoothly with the trigger-stick. You’re gonna have to paint over that red with gray if you want a 0083 version of that weapon, though.

The 90mm machine gun (similar to, but definitely not, Gundam 0083’s MMP-80) is nifty, but does not include the grenade launcher. The flash guard on the weapon’s muzzle was a loose fit on mine, so I glued it, and recommend you do too. It’s one of those teeny tiny parts that love to fall off when you’re not looking.

And now, the star of this kit’s weapon loadout, the 360mm 0080 model giant bazooka. Scaled to fit over the shoulder (as a giant bazooka should), nevertheless in the Gundam 0080 anime this particular model was shown firing this lovely weapon in the very unlovely under-arm pose - ARRGH!! naturally, I wanted to try out both poses. Both work well, but with the lack of an open left hand, it is difficult to replicate the Gundam 0080 pose (I‘m stickin’ to the over-arm pose). In Gundam 0083, this weapon was used by Zaku F2s as well as Rick Dom IIs, so I was also curious about the fit on the standard Zaku, and here I had a little shock - the bazooka’s handle WOULD NOT FIT the Zaku’s monster mitts - AARRRGGHH!! I’ll just have to see when the Zaku F2 comes out in HGUC format if this issue will be addressed for that kit. Perhaps the weapon will be slightly re-molded for the HGUC Kampfer...

Conclusion

Overall, this kit is mostly the second 0080 version - the 0083 heat saber is a nice touch and I‘m grateful it‘s included along with the first version’s panzer fausts and machine gun, but it doesn’t belong with this kit, strictly speaking. Will a recast in either Marine or 0083 colors be happening? Bet on it, but if you can’t wait (I’ve been waiting for the blue-toned Hizack for four years), pick up two more and paint your day away. They’re worth it.

PS: I like the MS-09R-2 designation much better than the older MS-09RII. It puts me in mind of the MS-06RD-4....
