Technology and Combat Characteristics

The MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jäger, or simply Gelgoog J, is a upgraded version of the MS-14A Gelgoog. It featured more powerful thrusters and additional verniers. To offset the increased propellant use, it also carried a pair of large external propellant tanks on the backpack. It was primarily armed with a large beam machine gun that boasted high accuracy (in fact, the Jäger was nicknamed the Gelgoog Sniper). Like other later model Zeon Mobile Suits, it was also capable of carrying other Zeon weaponry such as the powerful bazooka or MMP-80 machine-gun. And finally, the Gelgoog's trademark beam naginata. With its high performance and powerful weaponry, it was more than a match for the Earth Federations GMs and other mass-production units.

Armaments

  • Vulcan gun - Rapid-firing rotary cannons mounted in the Gelgoog Jäger's head. These head mounted shell firing weapons have a high-rate of fire, but have little power and are generally ineffective against mobile suits; however, the vulcan gun can damage lightly armored areas such as the sensors. These weapons are ideal for shooting down small, fast moving, lightly armored targets such as missiles or small vehicles.

  • Beam spot gun - The Gelgoog Jäger is equipped with two Beam spot gun mounted on each forearm. These gun serve the same mid-range defensive role that the Vulcan guns serve on the head, though they can destroy a Mobile Suit with a concentrate stream of shots.

  • Large beam machine gun - A highly accurate and powerful high-output beam machine gun. The technology of the rifle allows the weapon to fire compressed mega particles in the form of a beam which has the power to penetrate all but the specially treated materials. The beam loses power as it travels so if a target is too far away, although the beam may still it, it may have lost the power needed to penetrate the armor. This is primarily an issue with large heavily armored targets.

  • MMP-80 90mm Machine Gun - Upgraded version of the MS-06 Zaku II's standard MMP-78 120mm Machine Gun. the MMP-80 used 90mm Bullets instead of 120mm type, allows for a greater speed of firing and a higher rate of penetration. It is compact in size, making it easier to carry.

  • Twin Beam Sword - The twin beam sword, also known as a beam naginata, is the MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jäger's weapon in close-range melee combat. The beam sword operates by generating a beam of plasma contained and shaped by an I-field. Because of the heat of the plasma the beam sword can cut through any alloy. The Gelgoog Jäger's twin beam sword is unique in that it has a longer than average handle, about the length of two beam saber hilts, and has an emitter at both ends, allowing a single weapon to create two beam blades. This allows the pilot the advantage of incorporating different techniques into their fighting style than they would normally be capable of. When not in use it is stored in a back mounted recharge rack.

  • Bazooka - The bazooka fired explosive rounds that were quite effective against the armor of Earth Federation battleships. However the bazooka could only be loaded with a single round at a time, thus it had to be used carefully. The bazooka was front loaded which is difficult to do while a mobile suit is changing vectors. The bazooka could be stored on the rear waist armor while spare ammunition could be stored on the side hip armor.

  • Shield - The shield is a thick sheet of armor designed to take severe punishment that would normally destroy a mobile suit. Typically physical shields can only take so much damage before they succumb to the pressure and break. The Gelgoog Jäger carries a unique arm mounted shield styled after the shields used by the African Zulu tribe. When not in use the large shield can be mounted on the back to free up the arms.

Special Equipment & Features

  • External Propellant Tanks - The Gelgoog Jäger can be equipped with a pair of back-mounted external propellant tanks which substantially increase the amount of fuel the Gelgoog Jäger can carry, thus increasing the mobile suits operational flight time. When the fuel is depleted, the tanks can be ejected to decrease mass.

History

An upgraded model of the Gelgoog under United Maintenance Plan, one of Zeon's attempts to simplify both construction and operation of their Mobile Suits. Although it was one of the strongest mass-production Mobile Suit in One Year War, only a limited number of Gelgoog Jäger units were produced and deployed towards the end of the war, and only a few remained operational when Zeon surrendered. An known Gelgoog Jäger combat occurred in Side 6 against Federation forces.

1/144 HGUC MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jäger Scale Model Kit Reviews

Excellent kit of the Gelgoog Jager from Mobile Suit Gundam 0080. This 1/144 scale High Grade features an incredible range of motion thanks to it's polycapped joints allowing you to pose it in practically any stance you want. The Gelgoog Jager comes with a nice, heafty Beam Machinegun and spotguns in the forearms.

The MS-14Jg Gelgoog Jäger is a late model Gelgoog that appeared in limited numbers. The Jäger proved to be an extraordinary suit, with more thrusters and verniers with external propellant tanks to offset the fuel consumption. Armed with a highly accurate beam machine gun, the unit earned the nickname of Gelgoog Sniper Type.

An amazing kit!

I'll admit, the entire design of the Jager was already quite great, but having it standing on my table while I'm working or just bored is quite nice to think about.

The kit, when made with no modifications, looks fairly nice, and the coloring is already quite good. Keep in mind that the sticker on the Jager's inside-head should be thrown out unless you know you can do it correctly. Sharpie it instead, the sticker is horribly small.

The kit only comes with the Beam Machine gun though. I wanted my non-canon zeon machine gun Bandai.

This is a great High Grade gundam model. It looks good without paint but better with a bit of panel lining. Easy to build thanks to cleverly engineered snap-fit parts, and the parts are connected to the sprues in a way that the nubs/cut marks are fairly well hidden.

Great for a beginner to get a feel for building Gundams and models in general, as there aren't any tricky or advanced aspects of the construction.

This kit looks amazing out of the box. If you take a micro-pen to some of the lines on this thing and panel line it a bit it looks even more amazing. The kit is incredibly solid for an HGUC kit (you'll want to glue a few things on for good measure), and feels heaviest than most of my other models. There are however, some glaring issues with the kit.

The first issue I have with this kit is the articulation. 1/144 Gelgoogs aren't known for their articulation, and this kit is no exception. You can expect less than 90 degrees of movement from the arms, and slightly better movement from the legs. The waist moves just a little bit.

The second issue I have with this kit is the lack of accessories. You get a few hands (less than most kits), and only 1 weapon (aside from the built in ones). The Beam Snipe rifle you get with this kit looks amazing, but I can't help but feel like this kit should have came with a beam saber and possibly a machine gun.

Aside from those two issues I think you'll really like this kit.

To summarize.

Pros.

  • Well constructed. The nubs are in places that are easy to sand down, the kit is very solid, and the kit it's self is easy to assemble.

  • Looks great. I think this is by far the best looking Gelgoog kit available short of some of the master-grades. The combination of lower, more possible skirt armor, the angled feet, and the fuel fins makes the kit more visually appealing (objectively speaking) than the regular Gelgoog. To top off the visuals, the colors on this thing are great, and with some panel lining this kit will probably be the best looking Zeon Suit on your shelf.

  • The beam sniper rifle is an awesome looking weapon, and adds to the suit's already aggressive look.

  • The kit has a plastic piece that replaces what would normally be an eye sticker. It's hard to see, which is a shame because it looks great.

Cons.

  • The articulation SUCKS. You won't be able to pull off many poses with this kit (you can still pull off a few really cool ones though). Getting it into the positions you want can be a hassle too.

  • Why the kit doesn't come with the Gelgoog's signature beam saber and a hand to hold it with is beyond me. A spare fist hand or two and the beam rifle are the only accessories you get with it.

If the looks of the kit are enough to outweigh the two major cons I mentioned then this kit is a must buy....Did I mention this kit looks great?
