Infomation of MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type

The MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type looks very similar to the standard MS-06F Zaku II, so much so, that the Earth Federation can generally only tell the difference from color schemes most pilots apply to their units and the increased performance of this version. It first appears in the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The MS-06S Zaku II features a squad-leader "antenna" that is mounted on the head on the Zaku II for enhanced communication capabilities, which is used to designate squad-leaders or higher ranking pilots from other squad-members or lower ranking pilots. It also featured a more powerful powerplant, which in turn, gave the S-Type Zaku II greater thrust and acceleration. However, since no changes were made to the fuel tanks, the S-Type's operating time is shortened as a result. This allowed them to move at speeds 3x faster than a normal Zaku II (This figure was later retconned to +30%). This made it incredibly dangerous in the hands of the ace pilots it was handed out to, such as the "Red Comet" Char Aznable, who sank 5 Magellan-Class Battleships in the Battle of Loum.

It was noted in a extra feature that came with the 08th MS team DVDs that the 3 times faster figure came about from Char's clever use of Terrain and debris to boost off of, saving fuel and increasing his speed compared to normal.

Armaments

  • ZMP-50D/120mm Machine Gun - The primary weapon of S-Type Zaku II is a drum-fed machine gun. It holds 100 rounds per drum with spare drums that can be stored on waist armor racks.

  • M-120AC Machine Gun - A model of machine gun with a heat bayonet equipped on the barrel section. A limited number of these weapons were produced, and were carried by Zaku II Commander Type units for operational testing.

    • Heat Bayonet

  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka - A secondary heavy assault weapon is a bazooka type weapon. The weapon holds a four round magazine and can be stored on waist armor racks.

  • Heat Hawk Type5 - A melee type weapon bearing resemblance to a tomahawk that is stored on a waist armor rack. The weapon features a heated blade to increase cutting prowess. The heating function is powered by an independent battery.

  • ZIM/M·T-K175C Magella Cannon - The main gun of the HT-01B Magella Attack main battle tank, it is remodeled as an MS artillery weapon. It is mainly used for long distance attacks in ground combat, and can be loaded with HEAT or APFSDS rounds.

  • MarkVIII Sturm Faust - The Sturm Faust is a type rocket propelled grenade, good for a single shot, that Zeon mobile suits were often equipped with During the One Year War. Used mainly for anti-ship attacks during the early days of the war the Sturm Faust likely made a good anti-mobile suit weapon during the latter days has a Zaku could be equipped with both a Sturm Faust and a machine gun giving it greater versatility.

  • Cracker Grenade - Identical to those used by infantry, the cracker grenade is an explosive weapons designed to be thrown or launched by the MS and detonate after a set amount of time. The "cracker" breaks into several smaller munitions over a wide area.

  • Twin Zaku Bazooka

History

The MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type was introduced during the One Year War at about the same time as the MS-06F Zaku II as a slightly improved version of the F-type Zaku II. For most the the One Year War these S-types were the most powerful mobile suits fielded and were piloted by only the best. However the S-Type Zaku's superiority would end in July of 0079 U.C. when the Federation's RX-78 Gundam mobile suit would be rolled out. Approximately 100 units would be produced.

Char Aznable would use his custom Zaku II to sortie against the Gundam piloted by Amuro Ray. Despite Amuro Ray's evident talent he was still a novice whose piloting skills simply did not match up to Char's during their early battles. The only reason Amuro Ray survived was because the Gundam greatly outperformed the Zaku II in terms of both offense and defense.

Seeing that the Federation could create a mobile suit so powerful it could survive in engagements against Char Aznable likely prompted Zeon to focus more on the development of newer mobile suits, mobile suits that could fight evenly against the new machines the Federation had developed. Though most of these new mobile suits would have superior performance specs than any model of Zaku, the mobile suit that could be called the truest successor to the MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type would be the MS-14S Gelgoog Commander Type, which was also built by the Zeonic Company, the same manufacturers of the Zaku.

1/144 HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Commander Type Model Kit Reviews

This HGUC offering of the Zaku II is fit for the Red Comet! The kit features the advanced posability and articulation you've come to expect from the HG line, as well as many accessories: Zaku machine gun, bazooka, heat hawk, and several pairs of interchangeable hands are all included to assure your posing possibilities are endless.

Review by OZKai

In 2001, when the US releases of the HGUC line were out (to run alongside the broadcast of Mobile Suit Gundam), there was the issue of lack of 0079-based kits in the line, with the RX-78-2 Gundam just being released in Japan and was converted for domestic sale (with the Hyper Bazooka and Core fighter removed for unknown reasons, aside from making it cheaper, I guess). Especially with the lack of any of Char’s mobile suits being introduced into the line. Bandai did a quick-fix for this problem for us with a recolored HG 08th MS Team MS-06F/J Zaku II, complete with it’s own original boxart and manual.

I: Main Body

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 1The first thing you’ll probably notice is the absolute lack of details or panel lines. While admittedly boring looking, this is accurate with the antiquated 1970’s design of it’s animated counterpart, so I appreciate the “faithfulness” that had been allowed.

Something about the “red” (see: pink) used on most of Char’s MS have a hard time showing up on my camera, so the colors appear richer than the plastic actually is.

Head

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 2The head is fairly plain and simple, with the monoeye gimmick added to keep from being entirely lackluster. I added some light panel lining to the nose vent and painted the walls of the visor gunmetal to match the original lineart (a detail always overlooked, in my opinion).

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 3The monoeye is the foil sticker, however I painted the sticker silver and coated it with clear hot pink. I may restore the sticker, though, as I’m not thrilled with how it stands out. Or, lack thereof. The antenna was also snipped of its safety bar to appear more accurate.

Torso

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 4The body is simple and to-the-point, yet the design is somehow very limited in posability. The torso can not move independently from the waist, so no turning is obtainable (a design flaw with most Zaku’s, not fixed until the MG 2.0’s). The shoulder pegs are jointed similar to the HGUC RX-78, so forward arcing is possible for the arms.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 5The backpack retains no thrusters of any kind, as the original design was. An aesthetic choice, in my opinion, as I would have accepted some on this kit, even if recessed. The usual mount rack for the Bazooka is left on the back skirt, and can fold up to stay hidden, when not in use.

Very minimal painting was required, however I did go overboard. The neck area was painted the base body color (and one very tough to match through mixing) and the two “vents” on the ransel were painted in gunmetal.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 6The front and side skirts can all move, as usual, and actually give the legs pretty decent room for movement.

Arms

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 7The arms are, once again, kinda dull. The elbow joints were added to give the arm a rough 90-degree arc, as otherwise the articulation would be almost nonexistent. These joints were painted the same base color to be color accurate with the old design.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 8The right arm retains the shoulder shield which is molded in two colors: Light red exterior and blackish inside, with a subtle amount of panel lines being the only details added that are readily visible. Having the two parts allows for a polycap for attachment instead of the old peg-in-socket of the old HG. Nothing was painted on this, as the two-toned make beat me to it.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 9The left arm has the spiked shoulder pauldron, which is a simple 2-part + polycap assembly.

Legs

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 10The legs house the few little additions this kit needed to actually fare better than the US release.

Second verse, same as the first, the legs are bland, with the exception of the knee joint, added to increase the flexibility.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 11The pipes were implemented almost the same way as the old 08MS HG, but with the slots they sit in being less open, removing their chances of slipping out. The ankle joint is one of the few new features, though.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 12The typical ball-joint stick is left, but attached to a hinge in the leg to extend the foot downward, increasing the foot’s mobility pretty drastically, and allowing for more angling of the feet, themselves. This would be simplified for later HGUC kits as a now-standard joint.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 13The feet also hold the only added details, on the sole of the foot. When viewed with the rest of the kit, it stands out considerably, but it is nice that some detail was added, at least. The thruster on the bottom was painted gunship grey and black to give it some contrast.

II: Weapons

Zaku Machine Gun

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 14The standard ranged weapon of the Zaku genealogy, the machine gun has a design very faithful to the original lineart.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 15The scope was painted in the same manner as the monoeye, but seems to work better against the grey than the black. Also filled in the casing eject flat black.

Zaku Bazooka

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 16I personally find it funny how Char’s Zaku is always pictured with the bazooka, though to my knowledge, I don’t remember him actually using it. Anyway, the bazooka is also classically sculpted, and the only painting done was the scope (silver + clear hot pink) and the inner muzzle and exausts (flat black).

Heat Hawk

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 17Always a doozie, no matter what kit or how recent. The heat hawk is a single piece, well sculpted, but color-inaccurate inclusion to the Zaku arsenal. The nice thing with this is the addition of a harness to carry the heat hawk on the side instead of an unsightly peg molded in-place.

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 18The entire heat hawk was molded in grey, so I painted the whole thing, save for the cable, in Napoleonic purple and bright yellow for the blade.

III: Accessories

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 19The only included accessories are the extra hands for holding the weapons. However, this is a rare case of including fist and weapon-gripped hands in both left AND right options.

IV: Full Equipped

HGUC MS-06S Zaku II Review 20The Zaku is able to mount and carry all of its weapons at once, which is pretty standard for what’s supposed to be a very versatile war machine. The Heat Hawk can be mounted on the waist, while the Zaku Bazooka can go on the aforementioned rack on the rear skirt below the Ransel.

V: Verdict

For its obvious age, the kit has a lot to aspire to. Even the HGUC Zaku I that came out a few years later got double-jointed elbows and some back thrusters. But this was probably rushed due to the circumstances that surround this model. It definitely could have been better. But it has been a lot worse.

FINAL RATING: 3.5 OUT OF 5

Review by Jameson Leaser

Introduction

After nearly three years of waiting, the HGUC version of the Zaku II -Char’s, too! I was especially intrigued by it’s unique styling - the first Zaku release in quite a while that lacked all the MSV panel lines and rocket nozzles. Indeed, this kit is almost shockingly plain - at first glance...

Head

Perhaps the most curious feature of this kit is that the mono-eye can be moved - not by re-applying the sticker, but by rolling the part it’s mounted on right or left (that would been cool on the Z‘Gok). What makes this curious instead of cool is that it is rather tricky to do. The most direct way to do it is pop the top of the Zaku’s head off (it’s a very tight fit on mine, and a very good way to lose parts) and rotate it that way or use a toothpick or other small object (like it’s heat hawk handle or gun barrel) to move it (at the risk of scratching the mono-eye decal). There’s some play in the neck polycap, giving the Zaku the ability to “nod” (or at least look slightly downward.) As with other HGUC fins or thin antennae, there is a small bit of flashing to trim off the blade antenna for increased accuracy.

Arms

High-quality HGUC arms, with a nice, dense, three-part right-arm shield (two plastic plates and polycap joint), so much superior to the crude single plate of the HG 08th MST Zaku II-J and the bastardized “export” Zaku II-S. The really great part about this part is the forearms and hands - smoothly rounded forearms and big anime-like ham-hands (though, as I’ve said elsewhere, they aren’t EXACTLY anime-style). The major advantage of these monster mitts is that all the Zaku weapons are fully transferable with just about every other Zeon kit and vice-versa (that will be really great when they finally get around to releasing the Dom and Zaku I), though the MMP-78 included with the Gouf is a snug fit. A fully functional folding latch on the rear armor is available for the Zaku bazooka, and mounting holes are provided for the heat-hawk clamp (a feature seen on the 08th MS Team anime Zaku) on the hips.

Torso

The Zaku II lacks a movable waist, and as I mentioned above, it has no trace of verniers, bell nozzles, or panel lines so heavily featured on earlier Zaku releases. There have also been complaints that the dried-blood color of the kit’s torso is just...Too...DARK! This can be remedied with a bit of painting (I recommend the Char’s Z’Gok Gundam Color set ~ caveat: Gundam Color paints are basically nail polish, and clean up with nail polish remover). The nicely articulated shoulder joints (on the same level as the HGUC Gundam) more than make up for the lack.

Legs

Wide set with highly articulated ankles, the Zaku II’s legs also get high marks for stability and poseability. The soles of the suit’s feet are nicely detailed (quite a contrast to the rest of the suit).

Weapons and Accessories

The Zaku II-S weapon loadout is the standard Zaku package: Zaku machine gun, Zaku bazooka, heat hawk. If that’s not enough, remember that this is a gateway kit: many of the molds used to make this can be reused to make other kits, most easily the standard Zaku II, not to mention the rest of the Zaku line. Also, I’ve noticed ‘blank’ spots on the Zaku II-S sprues, suggesting those other parts and kits are already under way....

Conclusion

Very different, very nifty rendering of this classic bad-guy suit. In fact, the only reason this isn’t a 5 pointer is the questionable torso color. Highly recommended. Now hurry up with Char’s Gelgoog!

Very easy build and extremely nice looking. The 1/144 are not what I usually build when I do Gunpla I usually stick to 1/100 MG and above but I loved doing this one. Looks a ton better when panel lined. The default picture is a panel lined one so invest in Gundam Markers for panel lining if you are doing Gunpla it brings out a nice element. This model is only 3 runners plus the move able pieces you put in the model as you are doing it to add articulation points. Very nice model for a beginner.

Value: 5/5
Quality: 5/5
Design: 3/5

This kit was simple to build and looks pretty great when finished. The only problem I had was with the coloring. The middle body should have been a darker red/pink color, instead it was brown. Though this wasn't anything a little paint couldn't fix. If you want to re-color, I would recommend getting the Zeon Gundam marker set!

Value: 3/5
Quality: 2/5
Design: 2/5

This kit was purchased as a gift for someone who's never built gunpla before and is realtively easy to assemble. When you open the box you get three plastic runners and one polycap runner. Colors are somewhat off for what they should be. The chest is most noticable. The color given is a red/brown color and should be dark red. The backpack for this kit is simplified and does not include any thrusters as the anime version had. Also missing are the leg thrusters. The hands appear to be large for a 1/144 scale and are closer to a 1/100 scale.

All the tubing is made from flexible plastic in a red/pink color that needs to have panel lining applied for the proper effect. The weapons provided of the bazooka, machine gun and heat hawk lack detail. The seams are visible after assembly on the gun and bazooka. You are provided one sticker for the mono eye. I would recommend this kit for a child or someone with experience in modifying kits as that is the only way to update the look of this kit. Granted this model was produced in 2002, but if you really want a 1/144 scale of this MS, I'd go with the Real Grade kit.

Value: 5/5
Quality: 3/5
Design: 3/5

The MS-06S Zaku II Char Custom is a decent model. The Salmon Pink plastic mixed with the Brown, Grey, and black that make up the suit has a very nice look to it once assembled. The models movement is limited by its design. The legs are restricted by the skirts which are molded in place. It is possible however with use of a action base to get some classic poses from the suit such as the Char Kick.

Very little painting is required for this model. Right out of the box its in 99% proper color. Detail painting is a plus, such as scopes and the blades of the Heat Hawks, or the removable clip for the machine gun.

There are some issues with seam lines but here you have two options using a putty to fill them in, which would require a full paint job on the kit, or using Plastic Cement which will remove the seam line as it causes the plastic to melt together into a single piece.

There are better versions of this design in both Real Grade and Master Grade. But if your a 1/144th scale collector it will not take much to make this model a great addition to any collection.
