Technology and Combat Characteristics

The RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type, a specialized space combat version of the RGM-79G GM Command developed for use on Earth and in colonies. While the Space Type was visually similar to the regular GM Command besides the standard GM paint scheme, the Space Type mounted an enhanced backpack equipped with more maneuvering verniers and more powerful rocket thrusters. By removing equipment not needed in a gravitational environment, more internal space was freed up in the Space Type, allowing it to be equipped with additional verniers and larger fuel propellant tank.

Armaments

  • 60mm Vulcan Gun - A standard armament of the mobile suits that are descended from the Earth Federation Forces's RX series is a pair of head mounted 60mm vulcan guns. These shell firing weapons have a high-rate of fire but have little power and can't damage the thick armor of a mobile suit, though it can damage lightly armored areas such as the sensors. The weapons are ideal for shooting down small, fast moving, lightly armored targets such as missiles, small land vehicles, and attack helicopters.

  • Beam Saber - Unlike the standard GM, which has only 1 beam saber stored on its backpack, the GM Command has 2 beam sabers stored on the back of its skirt armor.

  • Shield - Shields are simple in their design, being essentially thick slabs of metal that the equipped mobile suit can use to absorb the impact from attacks that, for whatever reason, cannot be dodged. However shields can only withstand so much pressure before becoming damaged themselves. As technology progressed it became necessary for shields to be treated with an anti-beam coating as a measure of defense against beam weapons which can normally penetrate any physical barrier, however the coating gets gradually burned away each time a beam strikes it until it is rendered useless. Typically shields used by GM series mobile suits are almost the length of the mobile suit's height and are carried in the left hand.

  • 90mm Machine Gun - Because of the expense and difficulty of producing beam rifles, or even beam spray guns, the Earth Federation also produced mobile suit sized machine guns and bazookas, similar to what Zeon's Zaku mobile suits used, because they are cheaper and easier to produce, requires less energy, and is overall easier to maintain because it relies on older, less complex, well known technology. In addition machine guns had the advantage of holding considerably vastly greater amounts of ammunition, and mobile suits could carry fresh clips around to reload their weapons should the current clip run out. This allows a mobile suit to operate with greater independence as during the One Year War the only known way to rearm a spent beam rifle was to return to a base with the proper recharging equipment. The trade off is that machine guns are less effective. If a beam rifle or beam spray gun should so much as glance off of an arm or a leg, that limb will be rendered useless if it is not outright destroyed, and a hit to the torso is almost always fatal. Machine guns have greater difficulty penetrating the armor of a mobile suit, and must typically be fired from at least mid-range with multiple shots hitting the target before it can take down the target. And even then it is not always a sure thing.

  • Beam Gun - A standard hand carried ranged beam weapon is the beam rifle, though different models can be called different things such as a beam gun which is still the length of a regular beam rifle. Capable of firing concentrated mega particles, attacks from a beam rifle are can damage any ordinary armor that has not be specially treated to resist it. One of the more effective methods of blocking a beam rifle is to use a beam shield.

History

In the last weeks of the One Year War, the Earth Federation Forces refined its mobile suit manufacturing processes and developed several variants of the standard GM. It was during this time that the RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type was developed as a commander use version of the standard GM Space Type, along its brother unit, the RGM-79G GM Command. However, due to its high cost, both variants of the GM Command only appeared in limited quantities near the end of the war, with two units assigned to the Scarlet Team in defense of the Libot colony at Side 6.

1/144 HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Scale Model Reviews

The High Grade GM Command suit from Gundam 0080 is an awesome snap-fit model. The space version of the GM Command sports a red and white color scheme and comes with a Beam Gun, shield, Beam Sabers and changeable hands.

It comes with that and the shield and is fully posable upon completion thanks to polycapped joints. The kit is pre-colored and snap-together, so no paint or glue is required to complete it.

Review by Bargm

The RGM-79GS was a limited production GM fielded around U.C.0080 as a space combat unit. It shares many featues with its brother the RGM-79G but replaces the backpack with one more suited for space combat and also uses the Federations new beam machine gun as its main weapon.

Pretty solid, and well constructed. The proporrtions are right on(go Bandai) and the parts fit is pretty good. If you are like some people out there yes the model is pre-colored and has stickers for the places without colors(you will have to paint the earmuffs and chin HAHA).High praise for the clear green visor and IR sensor part. Posability is good, but the front skirts limit the forward leg movement to about 30 degrees. The kit makes up for this with arm movement. The wrist can actually bend upward! and the arms have all the mobilty they need, meaning you can get some pretty mean poses outta this baby! Waist and head movement are pretty average. The kit comes with 2 unlit beam sabers, 2 lit beam sabers modeled in white(grr) 1 shield, and one 1 beam gun.

Durability: 3/5

I've long been a supporter of the EFSF Cannon Fodder Mobile Suit, and have steadily built an army of the machines in plastic. As a regular Gunpla Builder and published enthusiast of giant plastic robots, I will stand and say that for a classic kit (by the more recent standards) this is one of the best. With a lot of effort and a little paint, this can go from being an out-of-the-box and onto-the-shelf kit to a high quality piece of model glory!

The assembly is not too difficult and will make for a great learning experience for any aspiring builder!

Quality: 4/5
Design: 5/5

The GM Command Space HGUC version will end up looking amazing if you topcoat and panel line, but there are some issues people should know before buying.

It has a beam saber, but it's not like most beam sabers included in kits. It's molded into the hand that holds it.

Let me explain that better. On the white runner where a lot of the other white parts are, there is a single piece hand/beam saber combo all in white. Frankly, it's one of the biggest "what"s you can make when opening a kit box, but I already knew about it beforehand.

You're going to have to paint the entire thing. Hand, hilt (well it can stay white, it's supposed to be white), and saber all on your own to get it to be of any use. So that by itself is probably the one big flaw in this kit. The only other thing is that the beam gun is molded in just one color (gray), so it doesn't have the white/red capsule on the back of it painted. I can't imagine it would have been too difficult to turn that back section into a peg/hole combination with at least an all white or all red capsule piece that you could just push into the gun to secure it (so that it would lighten your painting requirements), but for whatever reason they chose to mold the entire thing in one gray piece just like the beam saber and hand are all in white.

Besides those two things, and the fact you obviously need to paint the little things that don't come the right colors, this kit looks ridiculously good when finally completed. The head section alone can be given so much detail compared to how it arrives, to the point where it will make your other GMS jealous. I really enjoy how the backpack ends up looking if you properly paint in the red thrusters, and how stiff the legs/joints are for posing. Good stuff.

Review by Chris Guanche

Introduction

Of all the thousands of Gundam designs that are out there, there's a special place in my heart for grunts, particularly for the GM and GM-like suits. For 1989's Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket OVA, Yutaka Izubuchi whipped up several nice, updated versions of the old GM. These new GMs were more detailed, more realistic and definitely inspired by his designs for the Ingram from Mobile Police Patlabor. Today we'll be looking at the GM Command Space Type, a poor grunt that never had a chance.

Head

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Review 1The head is comprised of six pieces and features a lot of color. The central green piece provides color for the visor and main camera, and the "Gundam beard" and sides are molded in red. The head doesn't need much detailing, except for the vulcans and two pieces on the chin. The head has a free range of motion and is quite poseable, but be mindful of the backpack an an antenna mounted on the right shoulder.

Torso

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Review 2Colored in red, white and gray, the torso very faithfully recreates Izubuchi's design. The chest vents are nicely detailed, and a snap on piece in the front serves as the cockpit hatch (which cannot be opened). An antenna is mounted on the right shoulder, so be careful when posing as it is a fragile piece. You may wish to glue it in place. The backpack is fairly detailed, featuring six thrusters. It snaps firmly in place in the backpack. The rear skirt armor features a storage slot for two beam saber handles. Unfortunately, you only get one beam saber blade, which is built into a spare right hand.

Arms

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Review 3Very nice work here. The arms have a wide range of motion for various action poses with the beam gun or shield. The hands have great mobility, thanks to the fact that they plug in with a ball and hole design. Both forearms feature holes that you can snap the shield mount into.

Legs

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Review 4The legs are perhaps the shining feature of this kit. I mainly collect MSiA action figures, and some of them have great poseability in their legs. However, the GM Command Space outshines nearly every MSiA leg I've ever seen. The knees are double-jointed, providing great freedom of movement. The feet, particularly the soles, are highly detailed. They snap onto the leg with a peg and hole system, and they can move in almost any way you wish.

Weapons and Accessories

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Beam GunBeam Gun - The beam gun is the GM Command Space Type's main weapon. It's comprised of two pieces, both molded in gray. It's fairly well detailed as is, but to match the anime version you'll have to paint the ammo pack red and white. The only downside to this weapon is that since it doesn't really have a trigger, it tends to fall out of the hand. There is actually a trigger on the gun, but it's not hollowed out so that you can place a finger in there. A trigger would've made this work much better.

HGUC RGM-79GS GM Command Space Type Model Review 5Shield - Simple, yet very appealing. It consists of a main white piece along with a snap on red piece. Another piece on the inside features a forearm mount and hand grip.

Beam Saber - Nothing special here. The beam saber is one solid white piece built into a hand. Of course, you'll have to paint both the hand and the saber's blade portion.

Hands - Four hands are included with this set: one to hold the beam gun, one to hold the shield, an open hand to grip the bottom of the beam gun and finally a beam saber hand. Three of the hands are molded in gray, but the beam saber hand and beam saber are molded entirely in white.

Conclusion

This addition to the HGUC line is a definite winner. It faithfully recreates the elegant simplicity of Izubuchi's design. Great poseability is the selling point of this kit, particularly in the legs. The kit features decent armaments, but they are a bit light. It wouldn't have hurt to thrown in some extras, such as a bazooka or a beam rifle. That's a minor gripe, and this kit is highly recommended.
