Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Dendrobium is composed of two parts: the mobile armor section Orchis, and the RX-78GP03S Gundam Dendrobium Stamen - a mobile suit that controls the entire mobile armor. The Stamen had the ability to split from the armor section for independent action against enemy units. Operating as a mobile suit, GP03S carried a folding shield and beam rifle as standard armament, and special folding bazookas could be carried in place of either the shield or rifle. The traditional twin head vulcans were removed; the space thus freed was used to install more advanced avionics and sensor systems.

The Stamen also featured the panoramic cockpit and linear chair initially used in the RX-78 NT1, allowing its operator a full view of the battlefield. Originally a core fighter version was used (Gundam Evolve 4). However, it was changed to the current setting because if ever the Dendrobium had faced a foe so powerful that it could destroy the MA unit Orchis, the Stamen would not stand a chance and should not continue battle. Therefore, there was no need for 2 escaping devices since the Stamen itself was considered to be used for escape purposes. In addition, the wing binders on the sides of the GP03S both increased the maneuverability of the unit and protected the interface ports for the Orchis. A set of extendable manipulator arms used to retrieve weapons from the weapon racks were concealed in the forearms of the GP03S.

Armaments

  • Beam Saber - The beam saber produces high-energy Minovsky particles to form a blade-shaped I-field filled with superheated plasma that creates a deadly cutting blade. It is an effective weapon for close-quarters combat. This particular model is manufactured by Anaheim Electronics.

  • XBR-BOWA M-82A Beam Rifle - A specialized high-power beam rifle designed specifically for the GP03S, it features an advanced firing control system integrated into the weapon. The beam rifle is the same model as the RX-78GP01Fb Gundam GP01Fb "Zephyranthes" Full Burnern.

  • "Jitte" Beam Saber Blocking Unit - The "Jitte" is attached to the Dendrobium Stamen's beam rifle. It is a specialized beam saber designed to catch enemy beam sabers, allowing the pilot to quickly counter when there is no time to draw out his main beam saber.

  • Folding Shield

  • Folding Bazooka

  • Hyper Bazooka

Special Equipment & Features

  • Extended Manipulator Arms - "Dendrobium Stamen"'s arms are also each incorporate a large, folding manipulator arm, which is used to retrieve the Stamen's own weapons (such as beam rifles, folding bazookas, etc.) from their storage racks in the Orchis' weapons container pods.

  • Docking Binder Backpack - The Stamen's backpack is composed of a "Docking Binder" system, allowing the Stamen to link up with and control the Orchis mobile weapon component.

  • Core Block System - The Stamen is also developed with the intention of its cockpit block and backpack being replaced with a Core Block System. This Core Block is composed of a special Core Fighter II-Sp, with the cockpit/nose section borrowed from the FF-XII Core Fighter II. Although the standard backpack and cockpit block are constructed and installed in the Stamen, the Core Fighter II-Sp is never built.

1/144 HGUC RX-78GP03S Gundam "Dendrobium Stamen" Model Kit Review

The GP03S "Stamen" unit that is used in the massive Dendrobium is an awesome looking High Grade 1/144 scale model. The GP03 comes with all of it's signature weaponry. HGUC RX-78GP03S is a fan-favorite, despite the fact that it was only seen for less than an episode in the show. The Stamen has joined the HGUC lineup, and it's a good one. Featuring all the accessories you need like the beam saber, bazooka, shield and beam rifle as well as interchangeable hands, this kit is ready to pose! The guys at Bandai are making sure that every 0083 collection is complete and stellar.

Review by Jameson Leaser

Introduction

Of all the original 1/144 scale Gundam 0083 kits, I was the most pleased with the Stamen. It was a decent kit, fully within what I considered the High Grade range (certainly far superior to the GP01 and 02A kits). I was toying with combining the regular-use arms with the folding claw arms when I saw they were putting out a HGUC GP03S. After careful review of the ad, I pitched my previously cherished 1/144th scale kit, sold my Master Grade kit (but that is another strange tale) and committed to a HGUC-only Gundam collection..

Head

Typical sharp HGUC detail, with typical HGUC flashing on the delicate antennae. Remove at your own risk!

Arms

The centerpiece of the HGUC release, and also it’s Achilles’ Heel. Fully functional manipulator claws just begging to be fooled with and neatly-sculpted open hands that look good as well as allowing the manipulator claws to properly unfold is the plus; a very weak upper arm connection is the grave minus. For whatever reason, the post-and -sleeve upper arm used in most other HGUC kits is modified in this one. The post is a long ABS socket that connects to a tab on an ABS clip which serves as the Stamen’s elbow. The connection is very weak, and the upper-arm sleeve fit on the lower arm is very loose. At the least, the upper arm sleeve gets dislocated from the elbow joint easily. At the most, the joint pops off and that very small, very thin-skinned upper arm sleeve winds up in the vicinity of your big, clumsy feet. Careful!

Torso

The torso is actually less articulated than the previous HGUC Gundams. I missed the highly poseable shoulders. The tail binders are slightly better than the original 1/144th kit. Though the back looked designed for interchangeable standard / Core Block backpacks, only the standard backpack parts were included with this kit. However, B-Club’s EX-GKP garage kit modelers stepped up to the plate and put out a (rather expensive ~ ¥ 5800) resin option set (BCL2204) containing the missing Core Block parts and a better-articulated torso - time to break out the the trusty Gundam colors, nail polish remover, and the Krazy Glue Gel!

Legs

Typical High Grade legs, nicely proportioned, with that oh-so-satisfying sole detailing. The inner mechanism around the ankles is more finely detailed than the original 1/144th release.

Weapons and Accessories

Weapons and accessories are the same as the original 1/144th release, but of a much higher quality. The folding shield has fully-rendered e-pacs and handles that you can slip the manipulator claw into. The folding bazooka is nowhere near as crude and floppy as the original release, though it is tricky to pose (either straight armed with the elbows pointed out, or the ever-insipid under-arm pose. The beam rifle is, of course, the same as the GP-01’s, fully mobile laser targeter and everything. The FF-XII-Sp “Pistil” Core Fighter is a welcome addition, fully replicating the Master Grade release except in transformation capability (and with the resin parts, you can have your Core Fighter AND your Core Block equipped Gundam for the same price as buying two Master Grade kits. The down side? That you can have your HGUC GP03S with Core Block AND Core Fighter for the cost of two ¥ 3500 Master Grade GP03S kits).

Conclusion

The weak upper arm joint and substandard Gundam shoulder sabotaged what should have been a superb HGUC kit. And frankly, if a kit has a Core Fighter, it should also have a Core Block. Otherwise, recommended.

Value: 3/5
Quality: 3/5

It was a fun model while watching 0083 Star dust memories. it was rather simple mostly fell upon external body to hold the whole model together. it also has little to no movement for poses the stickers didnt hold well. And after a few months it actually stared to fall apart under its own weight.

Now when i did build this it was a good 5 or so years ago, could have been a bad batch of molds or just bad luck on a model. don't be discouraged and getting it it was fun and stayed true to what you seen in the series.

It's not a terrible kit, it's very simple and straight forward; a very easy start into building Gunpla, or a quick and easy way to expand your Stardust Memory collection.

Value:

- The design of the model kit is very simple and straight forward, there are very few small pieces that can either be lost or broken easily.

- For the price, it does feel a little lacking, but is otherwise fine once completed since many of its gimmicks do function, like the claws and shield/launcher folding up.

Quality:

- This is obviously an older kit. My HGUC Unicorn Gundam is right around the same price as this but has vastly superior detail, but that is to be expected with kits designed over a decade apart from each other.

- There is some painting involved with this, but not a very large amount. Panel lining really helps give this kit that boost it needs to stand out and be recognizable, so get the panel lining pen when you get this so you can give this thing some much needed deailing love.

Design:

- Come on, it's GP03S, this thing looks absolutely sick. There's no way I can dock the Gundam points on that aspect.

- The parts all fit together fine and even after sitting in its box for a good 4-6 years before I tore it down and rebuilt it, and even then after, still holds most positions without issue.

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure this model is worth, but if you're a diehard fan of Stardust Memory, or the GP03S, this is a quick and easy kit to build to add to your collection.
