Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Gundam was incredibly advanced for its time. Built from lightweight Luna Titanium Alloy, its frame was both lighter than that of Zeon's mass-produced mobile suits and much sturdier, able to shrug off a Zaku II's machine gun fire with little to no damage. Its offensive power was above and beyond that of the Zeon Zakus. The Gundam would engage in most battles with its beam rifle making it the first mobile suit to have firepower equivalent to a battleship beam cannon. In addition, it made use of two beam sabers, blades of extremely hot plasma which could cut through any metal with ease. Those beam sabers could be extended into a spear-like beam javelin, which could be used to stab into an enemy from a longer distance than the blade of the saber would allow.

The Gundam also used more conventional weaponry: it could be launched with a "Hyper Bazooka," the Federation's answer to the bazookas used by Zeon's Zakus; in addition, its head was outfitted with a pair of small vulcan cannons, providing it with a last resort weapon as well as a way of attacking light-armored aircraft and vehicles without wasting ammo or energy from its more powerful armaments. It also made use of a very unconventional close-range weapon known as the "Gundam Hammer" - a large weapon similar to a flail which could be swung at enemies to deal crushing damage.

The Gundam Hammer was eventually upgraded for use in space and outfitted with a number of verniers on the ball, and renamed to be the "Hyper Hammer." Lastly, it wielded a large shield which would offer it a defense against enemy attacks that not even its Luna Titanium body could withstand without damage. Gundam pilot Amuro Ray would make use of the shield as a decoy in many battles, taking advantage of its size to fool the enemy into thinking he was charging at them, then attacking the enemy through the shield.

In terms of technology, the Gundam was equipped with a sophisticated Learning Computer which would collect pilot and enemy data during skirmishes and allow the Gundam to operate more effectively. The data from the computer was used by the Federation to improve the controls of the Gundam's mass-produced form, the RGM-79 GM. In addition, it was upgraded by Federation technician Mosque Han shortly before the Battle of A Boa Qu to improve its reaction times, the joints of the Gundam were given a Magnetic Coating, based on the experimental procedure performed on the RX-78-3 "G-3" Gundam and later used Amuro's intended successor unit, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam "Alex".

The Gundam makes use of the Core Block System implemented in the other V Project units. The torso of the Gundam is mostly hollow so that a FF-X7 Core Fighter can dock with it. This allows the pilot to jettison the legs and torso of the Gundam should the Gundam be too heavily damaged and gives the pilot a chance to escape from battle.

Later, during Operation Odessa, the Gundam is given a support unit known as the G-Fighter. The two G-Fighters were designed to take advantage of the Gundam's modular system and diversify the Gundam's role in active combat. These modes ranged from the assault bomber G-Armor to the close combat support tank G-Bull

Armaments

  • 60mm Gatling Cannons "Vulcan Guns" - The Vulcan cannons were 60mm gatling guns stored on the sides of the Gundam's head. Having the greatest rate of fire of all the Gundam's weapons these are primarily used to ward off advancing enemies, shoot down missiles, or hit other fast moving targets. They also made good use as an anti-aircraft and anti-personnel weapons. The Vulcan cannons however had a hard time piercing heavy armor (though they had shown the ability to do severe damage to mobile suits if fired at point-blank range) and thus were not often used against larger, more heavily armored foes. Still the Vulcans were useful in preserving ammunition for the Gundam's more powerful weapons such as the beam rifle.

  • Beam Sabers - The Gundam was the first mobile suit to ever use a beam-oriented weapon in melee combat. The sabers are stored on the backpack, and can transform from saber to the "Gundam Javelin," a large pole with a three pronged beam at the end. The beam sabers use Minovsky particles held in place by an I-Field to form an effective cutting surface that can slice through nearly any material. The particles for the beam sabers are stored by E-cap in the hilt of the saber, which is recharged from the Gundam's reactor when the saber is returned to its socket. Once activated, beam sabers do not rely on the mobile suit's reactor and can be thrown or discarded as decoys. The beam saber is most often used for close range combat or as an emergency weapon once all other ammunition has been depleted.

  • Gundam Hammer/Hyper Hammer - A rather unusual weapon, the Gundam Hammer was essentially a large spiked ball attached to a chain. It was used to give the Gundam a ranged melee weapon. The Gundam could either throw or swing the Hammer around itself in order to impact and damage its target through the sheer mass of the hammer. Later, it was upgraded into the Hyper Hammer and had several rockets mounted into the ball in order to give it use in space allowing it to maneuver in zero-gravity also the ability to change it's direction before impact, and to increase the damage it could cause.

  • BAUVA*XBR-M-79-07G (Bauva eXperimental Beam Rifle Medium-range) - A revolutionary weapon for it's time, the beam rifle is the primary weapon used by the Gundam. Making use of the Federations E-cap (or "energy capacitor") technology, the rifle uses charged concentrations of Minovsky particles as ammunition. This gives the beam rifle firepower equivalent to that of a battleship's beam cannons. As the Minovsky particles destroy matter on a molecular scale, the beam rifle can penetrate even the thickest armor and destroy its target with a single shot. One weak point of the rifle was its energy limits. The rifle could only be fired 16 times before depleting its energy and becoming useless.

  • BLASH*XHB-L-03/N-STD (Blash eXperimental Hyper Bazooka Long-range) - Similar to the Zaku's bazooka, the Hyper Bazooka was a heavy weapon used by the Gundam. Technically a large rocket launcher it could fire several 380mm missiles to attack targets at long range. No mass-production MS's armor can stop this weapon. While very powerful the Hyper Bazooka had a slow rate of fire and fairly little of ammunition. Most oftenly used to take out slow, heavily armored targets.

  • RX*M-Sh-008/S-01025 (Renpou [Federation] eXperimental Medium Shield) - Hand-carried, forearm-mounted or stored on the Gundam's backpack, the shield is a simple defense used to block most incoming ballistic and explosive projectiles. Also used to great effect in close quarters battle with enemy mobile suits. Has a view port than can be sealed off with an internal blast plate. The shield is also used to deflect heat away from the mobile suit when undergoing atmospheric re-entry.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Core Block System - The initial idea of the Core Fighter was as a form of escape if the Gundam were to be destroyed, allowing the irreplaceable data collected by the learning computer and the pilot to escape from a replaceable machine. Another idea was that the Core Fighter could be launched into the field as a support fighter, and the A and B blocks could be delivered by another vehicle (the Federation developed a support unit, the Gunperry, for this role) if needed for a mid-air conversion into a mobile suit.

  • Hardpoint

  • Learning Computer System - A critical component of the Gundam's success in combat, the Learning Computer System was similar to a modern day black box. It recorded the data from each of the Gundam's battles for further use. However, the system could also actively learn and improve the capabilities of the Gundam, explaining why Amuro had such difficulty fighting two Zaku IIs on his first try but managed to hold off ace pilot Char Aznable at Luna II.

  • Re-entry Coolant System - The re-entry system is used for only emergencies when the Gundam is falling to Earth and has no chance of reaching its carrier. The coolant system acts as a large heat-resistant film which lowers the Gundam's temperature when descending to Earth.

  • Magnetic Coating

History

The RX-78-2 was the second of three Gundam prototype units constructed on Side 7 in UC 0079, as part of the Earth Federation's V Project. Built to complement the long-range unit Guntank and mid-range support unit Guncannon, the Gundam was designed to be a highly mobile, close range machine with advanced weaponry beyond that used by Zeon's machines.

A raid by Zeon forces on Side 7 in September of UC 0079 resulted in heavy damage to the other two RX-78 units built on the colony. However, thanks to the unexpected interference of V Project head Tem Ray's son Amuro inside the RX-78-2, the Zeon intruders were repelled. Though they had caused significant damage to the colony, the Gundam and its sister units were spared. The three machines acted as the defense force for the Pegasus-class mobile suit carrier White Base and protected the ship in its push to Earth and travels over North America and Asia.

The RX-78-2 would see use in the defense of the Federation's headquarters in Jaburo and the pivotal raids on Zeon's asteroid bases Solomon and A Baoa Qu. In that final battle of the One Year War, the Gundam engaged an unfinished Zeon prototype, the Zeong (piloted by Char Aznable), in battle. Both machines took heavy blows from the other, with the Gundam losing its head and left arm. The two machines ultimately destroyed each other within the corridors of the Zeon stronghold when their pilots had them both fire one last shot at the same time while on auto pilot. Amuro later returned to the Gundam's remains and used the still-intact Core Fighter to escape the fortress.

Despite Amuro's Gundam being destroyed, the series itself enjoyed a long service life in the Federation, being made with many variants before being replaced in 0087 by the Gundam Mk-II, the Zeta Gundam and the ZZ Gundam.

1/144 HGUC RX-78-2 Gundam Model Kit Review

The iconic "First Gundam" from the classic series Mobile Suit Gundam is a great, fun and easy to build High Grade. The RX-78-2 comes with polycap joints that allows it to be easily posed in dynamic stances and comes with parts to build it's signature weaponry which includes the Beam Sabers, Beam Rifle, Shield, and Hyper Bazooka which can clip on to the back of the model for storage. As an extra bonus the RX-78-2 also comes with a Core Fighter.

Review by Richie Ramos

Introduction

What was probably one of the most expected HGUC's has finally come out. The RX-78-2 Gundam has gone through a lot in recent years, from the original 1/144 HG kit (which admittedly was only revolutionary for its endoskeleton made of what appears to be primitive ABS plastic), the 1/100 MG ver. 1.0 (which in retrospect looked BAD), the 1/60 PG (which looked good only if you could see inside), the 1/144 FG (which was the best-looking, admittedly), and the MG ver. 1.5 (which was the best, on average). This new HGUC kit has basically blown me away. Yes, a lot of people were complaining about the idea of mixing retro-styling with PG characteristics, but in my opinion, the final product was well worth the combination.

Head

The head is based on a mix between the MG ver. 1.5 and the PG, and is actually small (think about Gundam Wing's proportions). It uses the usual polycap ball-joint neck. This is in sharp contrast with the large head in the old HG kit, which also has a lantern jaw to boot. My only complaint, however, is that it doesn't have the arrogant look the earlier kit had, but on the plus side, it looks much better, proportion wise.

Torso

The chest vents are the same as the HGUC GM's; they are recessed into the chest area, which is good for that retro feel. The proportions are similar to the MG ver. 1.5, but singularly lacking in detail, which was intentional to give it that retro feel. The backpack is also similar to the HGUC GM, but it has two sockets for the two beam sabers, rather than one. Even the internal waist array is the same as the HGUC GM's, but there is a surprise: Gundam has internal joints at the shoulders for clavicle movement. This means that the shoulders can move in a horizontal arc motion, which is better for holding the beam sabers with both hands, and to pose in various positions. It's a nice addition, and it very much improves the poseability of the kit as a whole.

The hip is pretty much a standard HGUC-style hip /crotch area, though the bazooka clamp at the rear side is interchangeable with a flat surface; the clamp is also a holdover design from the old HG Gundam kit.

Arms

The arms are exactly the same in design as the HGUC GM's, and it has the same hands, minus the outstretched claw-like left hand that the GM comes with. The shoulder plates, however, are different only in color.

Legs

Okay, there are more surprises here; the thighs are the same as the HGUC GM's, and the lower legs are taken from the PG / MG ver. 1.5. What makes it different, however, from the GM is that the ankle is double jointed. Yup, there is an upper stick joint, a middle piece, and a ball-joint at the ankle. This allows it to stretch the ankle such that you can recreate the famous scene where the Gundam first gets up. Considering that Bandai will also release a 1/144 MS Trailer for this model (from what I've heard) The ankle double joint is a pretty good addition since it allows the kit to also pose better than the GM in terms of leg poses (yes, it can do the victory pose).

Weapons and Accessories

The beam rifle is a scale-down version of - not the MG, but the PG rifle, surprise! It looks pretty good, but I kinda like the chunkiness of the original rifle from the HG kit. The bazooka is an MG scale-down from the looks of it, with the added detail that the back of the weapon clip is "open", and it shows the thruster-ends of the rockets. The shield is essentially the same (again) as the HGUC GM's; I do wish, however, that it had the HG kit's extra sabers and the rifle clamp on the inside of the shield. This kit also comes with a Core Fighter which looks damn good, I have to admit, though I think it is slightly a bit larger than I think can actually fit into the torso of the HGUC kit. The Core Fighter is not transformable into Core Block, which I actually approve of, since it gets rid of the inherent fragility of the old HG kit, which had no waist turning to begin with.

Finally, the beam sabers have plug-in blades, which I think is pretty cool, but problematic in the sense that the pegs are damn small, and thus easily cut off if enough stress is applied.

Conclusion

This kit is a must-buy; I cannot put it simply enough. It's the best iteration of the RX-78-2 Gundam so far in the 1/144 scale. It looks and poses like a very decent action figure, and has the looks of a Katoki's Gundam Fix Figuration toy, but in model kit form. It can be argued that this is the RX-78 kit that we've been waiting for. [Source: mahq]

Capsule

A HGUC Gundam!!! I was excited to say the least when I found that none other than the Rx-78 was finally going to get the HGUC treatment it deserved. For far too long we have had to make do with substandard kits of "the one that started it all".

A few years ago Bandai released the HG Gundam and it was a step in the right direction, but it left something to be desired in terms of proportions and fit. But enough about the past! We have a brand spankin' new Gundam now! So how is it? Excellent! The kit is very articulated and highly detailed. Extra effort was made in several areas to make the more interesting or easier to assemble. Most important of all once it is completed the proportions are dead on. This guy looks like the Rx-78 Gundam!

Kit Details

  • In General - The first thing you notice when you open the box are the colors! WOW! Are they ever vivid! This kit is a jaw dropper right in the box. The kit is molded in five colors excluding the clear beam saber blades on three sprues. There is a small sheet of sticker provided for the eyes. Bandai also includes a mini Gundam Weapons magazine and a HGUC catalog. Detail puts most other HGUCs to shame. Just check out the face, thruster nozzles on the Core Fighter and the Shield.Articulation is among the very best. Heck, even the feet have two separate joints! Bandai is getting ever closer to the tiny master grade. The accessories while very good are missing a few bits, but more on that near the end.

  • Head - The head is made up of seven pieces, the numbers of parts in the new HGUC kits are going up! Detail is great. The tiny head vulcans are sharply defined and the panel lines under the eyes are sharp, but not too deep-Nice stuff! Proportions are fantastic. It really captures the look of the Gundam very well. The center of the head fin and the chin beard are molded in separate colors to boot!

  • Body - The upper torso is built like most HGUCs, a front and a back with a separate waist section, So what's so great? Well several things! The first things are the arm joints. Instead of the standard peg and poly-cap arm arrangement you get a separate swiveling peg on a detailed plate that is sandwiched in-between the two torso halves. This lets the joints move back and forth and gives the arms much greater freedom of movement. The head is attached to the body via the standard ball and socket joint. The head can look up and down pretty well. The stare down pose can be done very well. As you would expect the chest vents and the neck plate are molded as separate color pieces.Probably the best part of the torso is the waist. A separate solid gray part is given to attach to the joint between the torso and the pelvis assembly. This lets the Gundam tilt from side to side. Cool! The waist can turn about 70% in each direction. The armored skirts really don’t interfere. Only the lip from the oxygen-cooling vent in the front keeps the kits wait from doing a 360.

The backpack/booster pack has nice detail. The beam saber hilts fit in snug on either side. That’s about it. Hey, it’s only made out of three pieces!

The Pelvis area is made up of fourteen pieces! The front and the side armored panels move to allow the legs extra motion and do too their rather short length never seem to get in the way much. There are four separate yellow panels that are attached to the front and back armored skirts. This is really going to help in painting and when adding the panel lines. A little trick would be to cut part B-15 in half at center point of the connecting rod. This allows a more realistic effect while increasing pose ability.

Bandai gives us two pieces to attach to the backside of the Gundam’s waist.. One is a white panel and the other is a C clip to attach the bazooka.

  • Arm - The arms, Hmmm…. Not much to say really. They are made up of six pieces minus poly caps. Three articulation points are available. All of the poly caps are hidden under plastic. They can’t be seen no matter how you twist them. The parts fit snug and have good freedom of movement. Simple but satisfying! The hands are attached by the good old ball and socket joint. The peg that attached the ball joint is nice and long and the socket joint is deep. This lets you move the hand in and out to assist in posing the weapons.

When it comes to the hands detail is good, not great. There are three hands provided. Two open fists and a trigger hand. Fit of the parts is good as is the detail. So why did they get a mediocre rating? The hands are simple halves with pretty good size openings for the weapons leaving a big detail free space. After the great experience I had with the Dom Tropen it felt like Bandai dropped the ball here. Oh well, minor nit-pick.

  • Leg - I originally started working on the legs. I thought to myself" Assembling the legs is always pretty boring so I’ll get them out of the way first" Boy was I ever in for a surprise. I actually had fun assembling the legs! There are some neat details here to appreciate,The first is detail; the panel lines are nicely done. This is best seen in the thighs. The panel lines on the inner thigh are crisp and once washed really stand out.

Moving on to the lower legs and calves these parts are simple left and right halves. What makes the cool is that the oversized kneepad is separate and once attached hides most on the seam on the front of the leg. The parts fit very snug and only a minimal seam needed sanding. A small vent is covered by the kneepad and can be seen through small openings in the pad itself. Gives it a nice 3D affect.

And finally, on to the feet! Instead of the standard ball and socket we are used to Bandai gives use a small detailed inner ankle joint. This attaches the foot to the lower leg at two points! The top is a poly-cap to peg, where as the bottom in the ball and socket. The gives the leg a much great range of movement than ever before. The inner assembly even has small pistons molded on them. The bottoms of the feet have excellent detail. As you might have guessed there are no poly-caps to be seen once the legs are fully assembled.

  • Weapons & Accessories - Bandai provides a pretty good assortment in this department. First up is the famous Beam Rifle. Detail and proportions is spot on. Nice panel line details and sharp crisp casting are also quite noticeable. The scope as well as the forward grip can swing from side to side meaning all of your favorite poses can be pulled off. This is where those moveable shoulders really show their value! The kit gives you two clear detachable beam sabers cast in a rich dark pink. First thing you will notice is that they are thicker than the average sabers we are used to. Man these guys look like they mean business! Put one in the twin fisted hold and the Gundam suddenly gains lots of attitude!

The 270mm Bazooka is built out of five parts and is again detailed very nicely. The weapon is solid dark gray. You could paint it white like in the series, but I painted mine all gray. The back of the clip has three exposed rounds and the barrel end is a single seamless casting. There is a moveable handlebar but darned is I know what its for. Much like the Beam Rifle the Gundam can hold the bazooka very well and posing it is a cinch.

Last on the list is the Shield. This is no simple one piece with a handle, No sir! The shield is made up of no less than five pieces without the poly cap! There is the white shield back (outstanding detail might I add!), a red outer shield and the yellow star sandwiched right in the middle. The gray handle has a ball and socket joint to attach it to the arm.

I do have a small complaint, in all of the 1/144 scale Gundams why is there no Beam Javelin of Gundam Hammer? These are really original and would have added a lot to this already excellent kit.

Bandai included a mini Gundam Weapons magazine and a HGUC catalog. The Gundam Weapons booklet shows four different Rx-78s and how to modify the standard kit to make them. This is quite neat and I admit it is little more that a hook to get us to buy more Rx-78s and Gundam Weapons books. But who am I to judge. It worked on me as I already bought two more to modify them as show.

  • Core Fighter - As you know Bandai includes a separate Core Fighter in the kit. Unlike the HG kit, this one is completely independent from the Gundam (and extra reason to buy the kit!) The little fighter is made up of nine pieces and holds some of the best detail in the kit. The tiny landing gear will provide a challenge to painters. With this said, those who don’t like painting probably won’t like the Core. The kit comes molded in blue and red only. I must admit that the cockpit section should have been molded in white instead if blue for painting purposes. With that said I would have liked to see a clear canopy for the Core, they did it on the Guntank and it would have drastically improved it’s appearance.

The Good

Sharp Detail, man this kit is just loaded with panel lines and crisp casting.

Articulation, I could write on forever on how the kit excels in this area. The moveable shoulder pegs, swiveling waist and double-jointed ankles make this easily the most pose able kit I have aside from my Master Grades. The overall sleek and slender design of the Gundam helps in this area as well. There just isn’t really anything that gets in the way of movement. Bandai deserves some praise for their extra efforts to make this kit workable. I was able to position the Gundam in all of my favorite poses from the series! Topnotch stuff!

The selection and design of the weapons, The weapons have great detail and are designed to take advantage of the Gundam’s high level of articulation.

Ease of construction, Lots of parts, short build with no problems. Excellent Design and Proportions, The kit looks every inch of a Gundam and looks cool at any angle.

The Bad

Believe it or not I have a few nit-picks.

The Hands, After the Dom Tropen with it articulated trigger finger and interior palms the Gundam’s hand look plain. Seems strange after all the work that was put into the rest of the kit to make it so detailed to have missed out on these.

Where is the Gundam Hammer? Or the Beam Javelin for that matter? These were only showed a few times in the series, but they are very popular.

No clear canopy for the core fighter, I can pass over the tiny (very tiny!) omissions on the Gundam, but come on guys! This feature would have made the Core look 10 times better.

In Closing

Well worth your time and money! This is easily one of the most display worthy kits in the HGUC line. The selection of weapons and the high levels of articulation mean that there are loads of poses and positions to be done. The overall look of the Rx-78 is represented perfectly. This guy looks cool and tough no matter how he is posed. The included Core Fighter only sweetens the deal and with a little work and paint will be a great companion for the Gundam or any diorama

Go buy it and enjoy the experience. [Source: tripod]

This model has held up well, poses well, plus has that classic design. Another must have for the collection my opinion. My only complaint is the beam saber handles that I got with mine the lines were not cut in so had some difficulty painting the lines around them.

This kit brings it all back to the days of old school. It really is a classic and a necessity for any collector. The kit is easy to build and there really isnt a huge difference between what you see online and what you get. I will say that some of the colors won't be as vibrant. Its obvious that some parts have been painted. From what I saw when putting it together, you could paint some details if you really wanted to. Overall, I really had a good time putting this together and I don't have any major complaints about it.

The Gundam HGUC 021 RX-78-2 Gundam Scale 1/144 was a really nice buy. It was very well detailed for something of its size. The color scheme was very good, and it was very good looking. It had plenty of accessories, listed below:

*Two beam Sabers (comes with beam pieces)

*A shield (great colors)

*A rifle

*A bazooka

*A spare hand to hold the bazooka and rifle

The kit has snap-fit assembly, like most gundam models. It has 3 runners (plastic tray things that the parts come on). 3 runners is the standard size for a HGUC 1/144 kit like this. Overall, a great buy. It's cheap, poseable ,and a lot of fun to display with your collection. Unfortunately, it doesn't say anything about Amuro Ray, the pilot in the Anime (kinda disappointing). Buy this!
