Technology & Combat Characteristics

The RGM-79 GM is a mass produced mobile suit based on the technology of the RX-78-2 Gundam. The basic frame was suited for a fairly high level of mobility, for the time, both on Earth and in space while at the same time proved easily adaptable to modifications that could be developed into mission specific GM models.

The armor of the GM is a titanium alloy, a sturdy metal that could be refined more quickly and easily than the Gundam's Luna Titanium Alloy. Although titanium is less durable then luna titanium, it is also slightly lighter which reduces the GM's overall mass compared to the Gundam.

The GM was armed rather simply, with most of its weapons basically scaled down versions of that of the RX-78-2 Gundam . The GM was primarily armed with a beam spray gun, which was basically a downgrade in most aspects of the Gundam's powerful beam rifle. It did have the distinction still of being the first mass produced beam weapon ever made - something the Zeon forces had yet to do. The beam spray gun had a much worse range than the beam rifles used by other Federation MS, but it could still destroy MS in one shot and was just as accurate and had a higher rate of fire and more ammo. The GMs also used 100mm and 90mm machine guns, the latter having less ammo capacity but a better armor penetration rate. Heavy weapons wise, GMs used remakes of the Gundam's 380mm Hyper Bazooka. For close quarters combat, the GM featured a single beam saber, although earlier models had the twin-saber backpacks of the Gundam. Lastly, the GM had a pair of 60mm vulcan guns mounted in its head, which gave pilots backup firepower that was highly effective against aircraft and ground vehicles but woefully inadequate against mobile suits. Early in production, the beam spray rifle had yet to be completely mass produced so that most GMs were equppied with machine guns.

By Operation Star One and Battle of Solomon, however, most the mobile suits used the beam weapon. It should also be noted that a small portion of the GMs stationed at the Federation General HQ in Jaburo also used the Gundam's beam rifle.

Armaments

  • 60mm Vulcan Gun - The Vulcan cannons were 60mm Gatling Guns stored on the sides of the GM's head. Having the greatest rate of fire of all the GM's weapons these are primarily used to ward off advancing enemies, shoot down missiles, or hit other fast moving targets. They also made good use as an anti-aircraft and anti-personnel weapons. The Vulcan cannons however had a hard time piercing heavy armor (Though they had shown the ability to do severe damage to Mobile Suit's if fired at point-blank range)and thus were not often used against larger, more heavily armored foes. Still the Vulcans were useful in preserving ammunition for the GM's more powerful weapons such as the Beam Spray Gun.

  • Beam Saber - The GM was the second MS of the One Year War that wielded a beam saber, unlike the Gundam it only stores one beam saber in its backpack unit. The beam saber use Minovsky particles held in place by an I-Field to form an effective cutting surface that can slice through nearly any material. The particles for the beam saber are stored by E-cap in the hilt of the saber, which is recharged from the GM's reactor when the saber is returned to its socket. Once activated, beam saber do not rely on the mobile suit's reactor and can be thrown or discarded as decoys. The beam saber is most often used for close range combat or as an emergency weapon once all other ammunition has been depleted. Some GM's were fielded 2 beam sabers during the war.

  • BR-M-79C-1 Beam Spray Gun - The Beam Spray Gun was essentially the Gundam's beam rifle in a smaller weaker form. The beam spray gun has a smaller focusing coil which results in a less powerful, and a more scattered shot. As a result of this the beam spray gun is less effective at long range, but is better at close range due to a more spread out shot, similar to a shotgun effect. While the beam spray gun is less powerful than the beam rifle, it has been shown to be able to penetrate the armour of a Rick Dom one of the most heavily armored mobile suits of the One Year War.

  • NF GMG-Type.37/100mm Machine Gun - Due to the high cost of producing beam rifles in the early stages of the One Year War, many mobile suits were equipped with machine guns instead. This particular weapon was primarily used by the Gundam Ground Type and its GM counterpart. These MS incorporated storage racks for additional ammunition magazines for this weapon on the side skirt armor.

  • 380mm Hyper Bazooka - Similar to the Zaku's Bazooka, the Hyper Bazooka was a heavy weapon used by the GM. Technically a large rocket launcher it could fire several 380mm missiles to attack targets at long range. While very powerful the Hyper Bazooka had a slow rate of fire and fairly little of ammunition. Most oftenly used to take out slow, heavily armored targets./li>

  • HFW-GR·MR82-90mm Machine Gun - Because of the expense and difficulty of producing beam rifles, or even beam spray guns, the Earth Federation also produced mobile suit sized machine guns and bazookas, similar to what Zeon's Zaku mobile suits used, because they are cheaper and easier to produce, requires less energy, and is overall easier to maintain because it relies on older, less complex, well known technology. In addition machine guns had the advantage of holding considerably vastly greater amounts of ammunition, and mobile suits could carry fresh clips around to reload their weapons should the current clip run out. This allows a mobile suit to operate with greater independence as during the One Year War the only known way to rearm a spent beam rifle was to return to a base with the proper recharging equipment. The trade off is that machine guns are less effective. If a beam rifle or beam spray gun should so much as glance off of an arm or a leg, that limb will be rendered useless if it is not outright destroyed, and a hit to the torso is almost always fatal. Machine guns have greater difficulty penetrating the armor of a mobile suit, and must typically be fired from at least mid-range with multiple shots hitting the target before it can take down the target. And even then it is not always a sure thing.

History

At the onset of the One Year War, the Earth Federation did not take the mobile suit threat seriously- this was until the Principality of Zeon military completely outmaneuvered and subsequently decimated the Earth Federal Spaces Forces in space with their MS-06 Zaku II. As forces of Zeon laid siege on Earth, the Federation developed several mobile suit prototypes, the most notable being the RX-78 Gundam, and from the Gundam came the Earth Federation's first mass production mobile suit: the RGM-79 GM. The GM would serve as the Federation's primary mobile suit throughout the war as well as the basis of the Earth Federation's mobile suits for over fifteen years.

The RGM-79 was far more mobile in space than the Zeon's Zaku II with a maximum thruster acceleration of 0.94 Gs, even better than the Gundam's 0.93 Gs and roughly twice of the Zaku's acceleration. On the Earth's surface, the GM is faster than the Zaku II in a sprint with a top running speed of 102 kilometers per hour compared to the Zeon mobile suit's 88 km/h. The GM had a hull armoured in titanium alloy, which is stronger than the Zaku II's super-high tensile steel armor yet allows for a minumum thickness, keeping its weight and production cost down.

During the One Year War, the GM would commonly be supported by the RB-79 Ball mobile pod.

Overall, the RGM-79 GM was superior is almost all respects to that of the Zeon's Zaku II mobile suit. And, to compensate for Zeon's initially being more experienced in mobile suit warfare, the Federation started with the 'quantity over quality' approach. By the time of the GM's true introduction at the Battle of Jaburo, the Zeon forces had already started production of the MS-09 Dom, a mobile suit that performed slightly better than the GM but not appreciably more-survivable or deadlier against the GM's weaponries. When the war went back into space, the GM actually outperformed the MS-09R Rick Doms in most ways and were outperformed later by the MS-14 Gelgoogs; unfortunately for Zeon, the Rick Doms and Gelgoogs would be held up by the bickering Zabi family politics and the equally-serious ineptitude of high-level Zeon commanders preoccupied with bringing down the White Base and the Gundam. In the end, the Rick Dom was produced in too few numbers and the Gelgoog wouldn't be deployed until the last two weeks of the war.

By the time the Gelgoogs entered service, they were piloted mostly by novice pilots and fresh recruits against a superior number of battle-hardened Federation counterparts, a situation that also plagued the surviving Zaku IIs and even the MS-05B Zaku I that were forced to soldier on due to the scarcity of new mobile suits. It is then when Federation victory became all but guaranteed.

The GM line was first established through the RGM-79[E] GM Precession Type, a prototype verison that would set down the basics for the GM. The basic GM frame would later be updated and upgraded into the RMS-179/RGM-79R GM II during the mid-UC 0080s and would become one of the most heavily modified mobile suits, spawning many variants until finally being superseded by the RGM-89 Jegan in the UC 0090s. 1/144 HGUC RGM-79 GM Model Kit Review

The classic "blow me up, please!" good guy-mecha from Gundam. Overall, this is one of the simplest kit of the series. All important joints move, snap-assembly, molded in color, extensive stickers and decals, two sets of hands, multiple weapons and shield.

It doesn’t get much simpler than this in terms of model kits or mobile suits! This classic mass-produced Federation MS is here in HG form, featuring all the expected Bandai magic: polycapped joints for full articulation and posability and complete color molding mean that no paint or glue is required to complete this kit. It comes with a shield and beam spray gun as well as interchangeable hands for more dynamic poses! This good old-fashioned suit will complement any collector’s arsenal, or make for great cannon fodder for your more powerful Zeon suits.

Review by Richie Ramos

Introduction

A tragedy happened over the past few weeks: the mall where I usually bought my Gundam models caught fire. Luckily enough, my favorite store didn't get hit. So it was kinda belated when I got the GM. But I am very happy I did; not only is it a joy to construct, it is also a peek into how the new HGUC Gundam will be.

Head

The head is basically a scale down of the GM head from the MG, down to proportions and even the Space-helmet-from-the-60's look. But it has a clear, green-tinted face plate with some internal structures that makes it classy all on its own. To give you an idea of how it looks, it looks like the original RGM-79's head, but with internal improvements like the GM Command from the 0080 series and the GM Ground Type from the 08th MS Team. The GM Command kit had the best heads with their sleeker angles, larger head crests and narrower visors, but this new head is a damn close second.

Torso

The body is a surprise; it has the earmarks of being based on the old HG mold, but the styling is so smooth and cartoonish that I was simply amazed. This IS simplicity in its finest. The chest vents are simple step-like vents that are imbedded into the chest, and the only interesting detail is how the collar assembly is done to give it a vaguely Trek-ish look. The backpack is a simplified version of the MG, again emphasizing a cartoonish look, boxy and minimalist. The single beam saber is also largish in heft, all the more giving it a Jedi look. My one problem with it is that the thruster cones are small. It takes away from the tech edge that the design somehow has in spite of the Zen-Anime look. The GM Command's body had a scrunched up look, but the military detail on the kits, though (like the shoulder antenna and the indented x-marks on either both waist plates), more than made up for the defects. 08's GM Ground Type was much better, but certain design constraints made for a very stiff-looking body, poseability-wise.

The kit has a new design: it has an internal lower abdomen that also functions as a look at the core generator of the GM. This allows it to pose its waist a bit more, giving it a more human feel. Of course, you could also push the whole upper body down so that the abdominal plates meet with the with the waist plates, but in natural posing, feel free to loosen it up a bit, so to speak.

The front plate is attached by a polycap to the waist, thus making the no-crotch look a possibility. I have to admit, it looks awkward when posed in particular ways, but it's a perfect way to achieve the flexible armor look. The side waistplates are nice and separate (but I am disappointed that the right hip plate had no holster for the beam spray gun like the one in the MG), and the back plate is actually angled a little bit to give more curves to the basically boxy design. The 0080 and 08MST's designs are left in the dust in this department.

Arms

Here we go, one of the more controversial parts the design. The shoulder plates are actually based, from the looks of it, on the original HG Gundam kit, with a bit of detail (micro thruster vents) that I've only seen on my Gundam Fix's Perfect Gundam figure. The internal shoulder armature is actually very similar to the one that the HGUC Hyaku Shiki has, as well as some other HGUC designs. But the round raised area (which in other designs serves as the attachment points of the shoulder armor) is now only a guide for a raised lines that are on the insides of the external shoulder plate. These raised lines act with the circular area to keep the shoulder plates stable and relatively fixed. Nice little detail, but it means a lot in terms of parts stability.

The upper arms are basically internal rods with a one-piece overplate. The elbows are polycaps with plastic coverplates; this makes the arm / elbow area look bulky, but it is at least more convincing than a polycap. The forearms are also different in their own way: it has openings at the sides much like the HG Gundam, but in this case, there are polycaps, so that one can plug in the shield (more on that later). The wrists are ball joint polycaps, and the hands are pretty okay, kinda art deco in the intentional lack of detail except for the outstretched left hand. The GM Command had a better design, I think, but the naked polycaps kinda turned me off, whereas the GM Ground Type is simply normal. Nothing to write home about.

Legs

The thighs are so obviously taken from the MG Gundam (ver. 1.5)/PG Gundam look, but my big beef is that the thigh to calf ratio is more for the original MG Gundam / GM than the Ver.1.5 / PG type. Thanks to that and the limitations of the crotch plate, it's not possible to have HGUC GM kneel. The calf area is taken from the MG, though stylized more, and some of the ankle armor and the feet seem to be a mix between the original MG design and the Ver.1.5/PG design. The ankles are much better than those of the GM Command's, which were great to look at, but not great to pose; the GM Ground Type is also lackluster in this area, with the ankle plates merged to the calf area.

Weapons and Accessories

The kit comes with a shield that is basically a mini-MG GM's shield, with a new ball joint and stick design for keeping the shield attached to the arm or the back of the backpack. It's pretty ingenious, without being obviously a kit design for usage rather than realism. It also comes with a beam saber, and a beam spray gun, which looks like a smaller version of the MG GM's gun.

Conclusion

Yep, this baby is worth it. Better buy it, it's sure to be popular. I am getting a few more myself. [Source:mahq]

Just put this together and it was one of the most simple models I have done yet. Even so, it was a fun build and I enjoyed every moment.

The 'white sections' (as stated by others) is indeed a bit of a mint green. It more so reminds me of a GM-Custom Action Figure I got as a kid that had a turquoise type of color scheme to it over-all which I love. It looks nice with the red when fully put together but if you want the classic look from the show I'd take the time to paint it over.

I only added a few minor details with some Gundam Markers (black fine-point and the gold) to make areas pop a bit but other than that I've left him alone.

This kit surprised me when i got it because you think its going to be white but the white actually is like a pale greenish blue. it is not bad but i ended up airbrushing it white to be more like the show.

There are not many weapons or accessories but it is a must have for your HG collection. overall its a fun, quick build and its easy to stand up, no balance problems. great value, the only downside for me was the color but it was an easy fix.

This was my first Gunpla model and I love it. Grunt suits are my favourite so I might as well have picked the original!

I always loved the original GM's and this is a perfect High Grade model for them! It's an incredibly sturdy model; there wasn't one loose piece in the entire kit. It's a great desk accessory. It can be posed in a variety of ways and still be sturdy!

The only problem though is that the picture represented by GundamPlanet has the tint wrong of the unpainted, right out of the box version. The unpainted version has a dull blue/green tint to the body instead of white. Honestly, this doesn't bother me and if it's a problem to others, it can simply be painted. Great kit overall and I highly recommend it!

Just got it for my birthday. It took like 45 min to assemble 3 hrs to paint (i use alotta washes). It is sturdy only problems I had was the holding hands the parts wouldn't stay attached so i ended up gluing them together.

Beam sabres wasn't clear red like the action figures im use to it:was a solid blue :/ oh well i enjoyed putting my first gundam together. Definitely a good price for a model kit.

The GM, from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series is the Earth Federation's first true mass produced Mobile Suit, based off the experimental prototype RX-78-2 Gundam.

The GM's color scheme is actually much different than that of it's predecessor. There is no blue, and almost no yellow on the GM, however, there is a lot of red. Also, don't be fooled by the picture on this site: the main body of the GM is NOT white. It's actually a very light, almost mint, mix of green and blue. While the color scheme does look good, it's a bit suprising if you don't know that it's not white.

As for posability, it's very good for one of the first HGUC kits (it's over ten years old as of this review). The head can rotate 360, but can't go up or down. The arms rotate 360 at the shoulder and rotate and bend at the elbow, and the hands are your standard ball jointed ones. It rotates and tilts at the waist (though the hip skirts get in the way sometimes). The hips are on ball joints and move forwards, backwards and side to side. The knees bend back about 90 degrees, and a little bit forward. Lastly, the ankles and ankle guards bend up and down.

The GM is rather lacking in terms of accesories, but they get the job done. You get a pair of normal "holding things" hands, a trigger finger hand for the right, and a splayed open hand for the left. For weapons, you get a shield, a beam spray gun, and a beam saber handle....with no hole to hold a beam. Instead of beams, you get a solid piece of plastic shaped like a beam saber. I understand that this kit is ten years old, but the original HGUC RX-78-2 is even older, and it had TWO beam saber handles, with beams for both. And this kit couldn't even spare one. It's not a really big deal, but it just really bugs me.

All in all, the GM, while lacking in accesories, has suprisingly good posability for a kit of it's age, and you can pose it pretty well, even with it's less than superb head and arm articulation. This took me about an hour and a half to build and it came out pretty well. And for the price you pay, you get a decent kit. I'd recommend it, just don't go out of your way to get it.

The RGM-79 GM is a very quick and simple model. Having only 2 runners of parts and a runner of poly caps its easy to assemble. 90 of the kit is in proper colors. The only real painting required is on the back pack which needs some grey detailing. and the machine gun ports on the head which needs yellow detailing. Total construction time was 3 hours including painting.

The plastic in the kit are basically 3 colors. A very light Cyan blue/green, a very vibrant Red, some grey parts for the joints hands and weapons, and a yellow for the chest and shield. there is also a single piece of clear green that makes up both the face visor and front forehead camera.

Using either black paint or a lining marker to mark the back side of the visor before assemble is required in order to get the proper look. Painting the inside of the head parts black or grey may also be advised as the heads interior is hollow.

Posing the kit is easy but limited by its design though some dynamic poses are possible. Being a "Grunt" suit and being relativity cheap its easy to build squads for displays and dioramas.

Highly recommended for any fan of the Universal Century.
