Scale Model Brands: Revell

Revell is one of the most famous manufacturers of scale plastic models, founded in 1943 as a plastics molding firm called Precision Specialties. One of the first toy related products were HO scale (1/87) train sets, including locomotives, and a variety of cars along with buildings. The building line was extensive, including a farm group, a suburban passenger station, and a variety of utility structures. Many of these Revell originals were later reproduced in other scales.

The Revell brand has developed very quickly into a synonym for plastic model kits. Every year, as many as 100 new products - models of the very latest or historical originals - "roll off the production line" and delight model kit enthusiasts throughout the world. The position Revell has achieved today as global market leader has only been made possible with new ideas and products that were always combined with high standards of quality.

Although plastic model kits are Revell's core business, Revell today offers a whole range of brand products. MagCliks, for example, has quickly won the hearts of fashion-conscious girls. And with Kick-O-Mania, every football fan has his very own star close enough to touch. Only "live in the stadium" is more authentic. The latest proof of our innovative power is the new epics' figure program. An encounter with the mediaeval world of sagas and legends, and the world of fantasy.

Revell USA currently uses a skill level system to identify the difficulty of each model kit that uses level 1 to level 3 to indicate increasing difficulty.

  • Level 1 is the lowest difficulty, requiring no paint or glue. Kits in this category are modeled in color and snap together, the kits also have lower part counts when compared to the other categories. Decals, if included, are adhesive based instead of the waterslide type. Level 1 products are released under a variety of names including SnapTite.

  • Level 2 is the intermediate difficulty. Kits in this category require paints and glue to assemble, and traditional waterslide decals are used in this kit. Level 2 kits are the most popular difficulty produced by Revell.

  • Level 3 is the highest difficulty. Kits in this category require paints and glue to assemble. Aside from being more complex models, Level 3 kits frequently include additional parts for building different versions or have different color schemes and decals.

Revell Germany uses a similar scale that ranges from 1 to 5. Skill-level 1 kits require no glue or paint. Following skill levels require paint and glue with the number of parts determining their level. Skill-level 2 has up to 30 parts, skill-level 3 has up to 100 parts, skill-level 4 has up to 150 parts and skill-level 5 has over 150 parts.
