Infomation of AMX-004 Qubeley

The AMX-004 Qubeley is a mobile suit that appears in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. The unit is piloted by Haman Karn.

Technology & Combat Characteristics

The Qubeley is a next generation mobile suit designed for Newtypes that features numerous technological innovations which allow it to fight on par with other advanced mobile suits that appeared during the Gryps Conflict and the First Neo Zeon War.

Developed from the data gathered from the MS-09R4 Psycommu Rick Dom "Schnee Weiss" and the AMX-001 Prototype Qubeley, the Qubeley featured a set of wing binders on its shoulders to assist in AMBAC (Active Mass Balance Auto Control), granting phenomenal mobility. Though appearing like a set of two, the wing binders are actually four independently moving sections with two mounted on each shoulder. Though lacking the full range of motion as the arms and legs these wing binders bring the Qubeley's total number of movable limbs up to eight. Furthermore the wing binders are the location of the Qubeley's primary thrusters which cannot be placed on the unit in the form of a backpack as is the standard practice with mobile suits due to the tail binder. the Quebley lacks the mega particle cannons of the prototype version, replaced them with a pair of dual-purpose beam launchers that can double as beam sabers for close-range combat.

The most incredible feature of the Qubeley is the fact that it is the first combat mobile suit to be equipped with a mobile suit-sized psycommu system with the new remote funnel weapon. The prototype featured a similar system but its psycommu had not been fully miniaturized and the funnels were stored in its main body, leaving the prototype with a large body that stood 25 meters tall. The system aboard the Qubeley had been perfected and its ten funnel weapons were stored in a tail binder allowing for quicker deployment and recall for charging.

Already a formidable mobile suit with its ability to attack from multiple directions with its funnels, the Qubeley was the pinnacle of mobile suit technology in the Gryps Conflict and the First Neo Zeon War.

Armaments

  • Beam Launcher/Saber

The standard weapons of the Qubeley is a set of dual purpose beam launchers/beam sabers that are stored in the forearms. When used as beam launchers the weapons remain mounted in the forearms, but when used as beam sabers they are hand carried.

  • Funnels

The Qubeley keeps 10 funnels stored in a tail binder. These funnels are technological descendants of the Elmeth's remote bit weapons. The funnels are smaller than the bits as they lack their own power generators, instead using energy capacitors. This allows the funnels to be small enough so that a large number of them can be stored on a mobile suit but requires that the funnels return to the tail binder for recharging after a certain amount of time.

Special Equipment & Features

  • Psycommu system

During the One Year War, the researchers of the Flanagan Institute discover that Newtypes emit powerful thoughtwaves - similar to regular brainwaves, but not electrical in nature - which they call psycho-waves. The Flanagan Institute goes on to develop a mind-machine interface called the psycommu system, which receives these thoughtwaves and translates them into computer commands. Using this interface a Newtype pilot can direct remote weapons, and operate huge mobile armors, by thought alone. The Principality forces based at the asteroid Axis succeed in miniaturizing the psycommu system, so that it can be installed in regular-sized mobile suits like the AMX-004 Qubeley. The Federation Forces, meanwhile, concentrate on developing artificially enhanced cyber-Newtypes to operate their psycommu weapons.

History

A next-generation mobile suit development of the Principality of Zeon's MAN-08 Elmeth mobile armor, the AMX-004 Qubeley was designed and built by Axis military leader Haman Karn for her personal use. The Qubeley would be fielded during the Gryps Conflict at the end of which it and its pilot Haman Karn would fight against Quattro Bajeena and his MSN-00100 Hyaku Shiki. Despite Quattro Bajeena being one of the best mobile suit pilots and his Hyaku Shiki being one of the most advanced mobile suits fielded by the AEUG during the Gryps Conflict, they were simply outmatched by Haman Karn and the power of her Qubeley.

Haman Karn would continue to use the Qubeley as her personal mobile suit throughout the First Neo Zeon War where it would continually defeat newer mobile suit models. Eventually Haman Karn/Qubeley would duel against Judau Ashta/MSZ-010 ΖΖ Gundam. The fight resulted in a draw with both machines disabling each other, however the war was over as Haman Karn couldn't hope to escape the surrounding Federation forces with her damaged Qubeley. Ultimately, instead of surrendering Haman crashed the Qubeley into an asteroid fragment destroying both the mobile suit and herself.

During the First Neo Zeon War, two variant models would be built and fielded. One would be the AMX-004 Qubeley Mk-II, of which two units were built and were virtually identical to the original aside from two additional funnels and an improvement to the Psycommu System. The other variant is the AMX-004G Qubeley Mass Production Type, which was equipped with a pair of active cannons and had a larger tail binder that could store 30 funnels. The mass production model would be used by the Glemy Faction in a coup d'etat against Haman Karn. [Source: wikia]

Main Body

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Main Body frontHGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Main Body rearThe kit perfectly showcases the unique design of the Qubeley, from the elongated head, wide shoulder binders and broad legs. All while remaining slim and agile. Color separation is decent, however a LOT is required to paint if you want to avoid having a bunch of foil stickers slapped on.

Head and Torso

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Head and Torso 1The body has a couple joints that were rare at the time which allows the chest to arch upwards, which will be shown in the pose section. Not a whole lot needed painting on the torso besides the flat black for the panel gaps and the holes where the pipes beside the head emerge. The front armor is the first place that need to be painted pink in the "vents". I also panel lined the center line of the front armor and filled the gaps on the side armor with flat black.

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Head and Torso 2The "2 Lmes" (An Engrish mistranslation of "Elmeth II") was filed with black to define it. OZKai didn't bother painting the cables on the backside of the torso, as they're purple on the lineart. The pink vents for the tail binder had to be painted, as well.

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Head and Torso 3The cockpit hatch's blast shield can lower and raise.

The head, especially the eyes, are very intimidating. The lines going down the face were drawn on to lengthen the field.

The neck, like the chest, allows for further upward arching to aid in Qubeley's flight pose. There are two vents on the sides of the head that OZKai just panel lined. Although they can't be seen unless you tilt the head up like this. HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Head and Torso 4HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Head and Torso 5

Arms

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Arms 1The arms have an abstract shrine maiden's sleeve design to the forearms, with thin pink biceps and a plain pink shoulder armor. Those will be the base for the shoulder binders.HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Arms 2HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Arms 3

The shoulders can't rotate, and instead have the classic two-polycap elbow joint. However, thanks to the flared cuff at the elbow of the forearm, it hides the joint very well.

The painting for the arms was limited to the blue extrusions at the hand guard, and the two small vents on the shoulder armor in flat black.

The inner flaring of the sleeve is a separate part an helps hold the lower elbow together. good subtle details along the inner sleeve thanks to this part!HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Arms 4

Hands

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - HandsTwo sets of hands - open palmed and saber gripped - are included. Small options, but given the armaments, they're all that's necessary.

Legs

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Legs 1HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Legs 2The legs have a nice flare to them that is very reminescent to Mamoru Nagano's The Five Star Stories designs. More pink vents along the sides of the legs and knee armor, as well as two blue circles on the side of the thigh. Finished off with the black panel lining, it gives a good overall appearance to the structure.

Some parts of the knee joint had to be painted gray. Also, the purple thrusters that inhabit the bottom of the heels. The thruster itself made flat black, as usual.

Shoulder Binders

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Shoulder Binders 1HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Shoulder Binders 2The shoulder binder exteriors are simple and the same on both arms, having both front and back views the same asymmetry with only the blue vents differing in their flow directions.
(Front: the vent lines run vertically, on the rear: horizontally)

Those vents were separate pieces needing no paint. However, once again, the pink vents are to be painted in. Just as Revelations foretold.

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Shoulder Binders 3HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Shoulder Binders 4All of the promo shots (including the one at the top) and all kits released since this have the inside of the binders as red. All original lineart and screenshots show it as black (or shadowed). OZKai choses the CG model from Gundam Vs. Zeta Gundam, as most of that games models were very true to the original designs, which keeps the insides white on the binders. Honestly, with no real red anywhere else on the body, and the thin white plastic would surely let it show through, I'm fine with the plain white.  Only the thrusters got painted, flat black again.

The binders attach to the polycaps on the shoulder armor. The joints simply rotate along that to extend and open. The joint on the binder allows it to "flap."

Th binders, when closed, can appear almost seamless. OZKai went ahead and strengthened the joints on all the polycaps, by letting glue dry in them before attaching them together.

Tail Binder

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Tail BinderThe tail binder just attaches to the back via a simple polycap. All ten funnels are separate parts. However due to their size, OZKai has adhered them into the binder. OZKai painted all ten of them purple, however it was thinly mixed and didn't coat well. It looks alright, but it could have been better. Also painted the vent slits near the joint flat black.

Beam Saber

HGUC AMX-004 Qubeley Review - Beam SaberThe only weapons besides the funnels. Rather typical of Psycommu MS, come to think about it... Single pieced clear yellow. Painted the hilts pink.

Summary

For being one kit prior to the original Hyaku-Shiki rlease, the posability of this kit far surpasses it, and shows the aim of the HGUC line very well. Though, like the Hyaku, it's color separation did suffer some.
