Technology & Combat Characteristics

Shortly after its initial introduction, the MS-07A Gouf was replaced by the completed MS-07B Gouf model. This full model had the 75 mm machine gun left hand and "heat rod", which could be used as a superheated slicing weapon or as a grappling weapon with a powerful electric shock effect. It also had a powerful heat sword, an improved heat-based weapon from the Zaku's heat hawk. The Gouf could also use the standard Zaku II weapons, such as 120 mm machine gun or 280 mm bazooka.

The Gouf easily outstripped the MS-06F Zaku II in terms of speed, power output, and melee combat ability. But the mobile suit's overall improvement was not great enough to be justified by its increased cost. The Gouf's production was cut short by the development of a more cost efficient unit, the more powerful and nimble MS-09 Dom. Despite its very short production run, it was still deployed across the world alongside Zakus and Doms.

Armaments

  • 5-barrel 75mm Machine Gun

The MS-07B Gouf's left hand is replaced by a 75mm machine gun. The gun has five barrels which are shaped to look like fingers.

  • Heat Rod

Stored in the Gouf's right arm is a tentacle-like heat rod weapon. The heat rod could be superheated to give it cutting properties. If the heat rod is not used as a slicing weapon it can be used to grapple enemy units and is capable of delivering an electric shock upon contact.

  • 120mm Machine Gun

Like the MS-07A Gouf, the MS-07B can use weapons from the Zaku such as the drum-fed 120mm machine gun with 100 rounds per drum.

  • Heat Sword Type-βIV

The MS-07B Gouf features an improved heat sword that can be superheated to increase its cutting ability. The heat sword is stored in the Gouf's shield.

  • H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P Zaku Bazooka

Another Zaku weapon that the Gouf can use is the H&L-SB25K/280mmA-P bazooka. The bazooka has a four round magazine.

  • Heat Hawk Type5

An axe-shaped close combat weapon, it uses a super-heated blade to cut through the armor of enemy MS or vehicles. The thermal energy is generated by the power output of the Gouf's thermonuclear reactor and relayed through the MS' hands.

History

The Zeon pilot, Lieutenant Ramba Ral, played havoc with the crew of the Pegasus-Class Assault Carrier White Base and the young pilot of the RX-78-2 Gundam with his YMS-07B Gouf, a prototype of the standard B-Type Gouf.

Shortly after the Gouf's introduction its production was halted in favor of the MS-09 Dom. However research into the Gouf's basic design would continue which would lead to the development of several improved models that would see limited production. Despite the research none of the Gouf's models would see development in the United Maintenance Plan that the Principality of Zeon initiated to improve existing mobile suit designs, likely due to Zeon putting more focus into the One Year War's space front at the time of the plan's initiation. HGUC MS-07B Gouf Model Kit Review by Clem Master Janitor

Introduction

Back when the HGUC line was being introduced, Bandai introduced us to the original Gouf design, as seen in Mobile Suit Gundam. I purchased it about a year after its release seeing as I saw a cool design that I had never seen before. Now, six years later, I've tuned up my original slap together job into the best my skill would allow. Was the kit worth all the effort?

Head

The head is standard (or set the standard) for most of the OYW HG kits from the Zeonic side of the fence. The head can swivel left to right, but the mono-eye is just a simple sticker. The eye is immobile so you get to choose where the Gouf will spend its existence staring.

Torso

The torso of the Gouf is very simple. It's a single piece, no flex in the waist design similar to the design released with the 08th MS Team Gouf Custom kit a few years earlier. It would have been nice to see some flex to the Gouf as it seems necessary for a design with such close range weapons to want to be able to twist and turn. Another nice addition would have been some flex to the shoulder joints similar to the HGUC Gundam. This would have allowed a few extra poses and reduced the rigidity of the kit. Even the skirt armor is fused to the body. Where this might aggravate some one like myself (just slightly), the design shows Bandai's earlier goals for the HGUC series of making simple model kits that can do a lot without being too complex.

The colors are dead on so almost no painting is necessary. You'll need to apply the decals to the orange chest panels or paint them. With the exception of this, the monoeye, and the heat saber, you can get away without painting any of the kit. It's great for beginners curious about these kits or interested in trying new techniques. You really don't have to do much masking to paint the kit. It's of interest to note that there are some really shallow female pegs in the rear skirt armor suggesting the designers intended to add a storage rack for the included MMP-78 machine gun or maybe a bazooka. Since it never came to light, we'll never know. Would have been a nice addition, though.

Arms

The upper arms are the same for the Gouf. It's the lower arms that make the two different. The right has the option of using the heat rod or the machine gun. A hollowed piece housing the heat rod connects to the forearm via an embedded polycap making switching out the weapons simple. Using the same hand as the machine gun is a pain since having a second, dedicated hand for the heat rods would have created a faster switch time and reduced the potential for breaking the connection pieces of the hand. Still, odds are most people will go with the heat rod versus the machine gun. Just looks more threatening that way.

The left arm is designed with an insert for the shield. It slides over the rear part of the arm and clamps to the kit. This creates a bit of friction that can tear off paint if you're not too careful. The left hand is only available in the 5-barrel machine gun fingers design. They are rigid and fixed ahead. I've had many people ask me if that's how they look because it seems ‘odd.' They're right. The MG version appears to have the flex option not available here. Though it sets this Gouf apart from others, the inclusion of another, standard left hand would have been great for those wishing to get away from the Ramba Ral feel.

Legs

Legs are simple and standard fare for HGUC of the time. After you connect the upper legs to the hip section of the torso, it slides into the skirt armor and becomes a permanent stay. No swivel here. You can try to pull the legs out, if you really want, but it makes no sense to risk breaking it. That is unless you're like me and decide to constantly tear it apart and repaint and rework the kit because you get this cheapskate streak of rebuilding kits instead of buying new ones. Since the upper legs can't move much due to the skirt armor being so tight, the lower leg movements are hampered, reducing the number of poses you can really make with the kit.

Weapons and Accessories

A machine gun, two heat rods, a shield, and heat saber are included with this kit. The machine gun is straight forward, but the heat rods are unique. You can decide to use a heat rod that is coiled at the Gouf's side or launching straight out in attack mode. The heat saber sits in the shield, but the yellow color of the blade doesn't hide well in the shield and its tip pokes above the shields edges. From time to time the blade will drop out of the shield too.

Bandai released a series of aftermarket waterslide decals specific to this kit, the HGUC Zaku I, and the HGUC Zaku II (both standard and Char's version). These aftermarket parts are very cheap (about $5.00 was the most expensive price I found) and can add a lot of life to your kit. Just thought I'd mention that.

Conclusion

This kit is very simple and basic. It is a great entry kit into the world of HGUC kit building for the novice just looking to get their feet wet. With a few upgrades, this kit would be an amazing design, but for now this is what we have to play with in the land of HG. If you want something fancy, go with the MG version or the Glorious version if you want a super challenge on the Gouf. To sum it up, there's nothing amazing about this kit but nothing terrible either. It's just a solid kit.

HGUC MS-07B Gouf Model Kit Review by Mangyver5223

MS quick Bios

This MS was another step of improvement from MS-06 Zak II in terms of performance and armaments. The pilot who made this machine become famous was ace pilot Ramba Ral. This MS also become nasty menace to the White Base (WB) crew especially Amuro ray itself. This MS also nearly destroy Gundam in episode 24 Gundam 0079. Though this MS was superior, but this MS was only intended for land battle not for both land and space like zaku II.

Weapons

Heat Saber - most early Zeon's MS melee weapon using heat type weapon since the introduction for Gundam's beam saber technology was still fresh. The Zeon only use beam weapon technology upon introduction of MS-14 Gelgoog.

75mm Five-Chambered machine gun - This was the unique built-in weapon for Type B's gouf left hand. I didn't really much know how powerful this weapon but I believe this weapon are more powerful than Vulcan that Gundam has.

Heat Rod -  Gouf's signature weapon. Can be used to shock or melt any MS's armor. This weapon also nearly destroyed Amuro's Gundam in episode 24.

MMP-78 Machine Gun - Optional hand armaments for Gouf. The design slightly differ than Zaku IIs machine gun.Unfortunately. for this early HGUC version, the sensor and 2nd handle unable to move freely.

Instead the weapons stated above, Gouf still can use any Zaku's or any early Zeon's MS.

Articulation

Since the fact that this MS was an early HGUC model, the movement of this MS especially on the legs was limited unless you pull the middle joint section of both legs for better movement range.

Pros and Cons

Pro(s)

  • Pretty basic MS and easy to snap-fit

  • Cheap (about 11.42 USD)

Con(s)

  • pretty basic articulation compared to nowadays HGs

  • Lotsa seamlines

  • the joint between hip and lower part of leg easily fall but can be fixed with superglue etc

Conclusion

For those who familiarize with gunpla as a hobby, you can try get this kit since it was cheap and easy to build. For those who love to collect HG lineup, this kit offers a variety of armaments and if you want to test your skills min removing seamlines etc, this kit was a good subject for you to challenge your skills.
